1.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced garbage bag with a hose.
I bought this for my fireplace last fall to save on a/c costs. I got about 3 uses out of it before it started developing holes. So many in fact duct taping them will not even keep it inflated anymore. Speaking of which it doesn't even come with an inflator. You have to use lung power which is unacceptable for the price. The plastic itself is transparent total garbage. No...

I had bought a smaller chimney balloon thinking that I would put it up a long ways in the chimney flute. That plan didn't work out as I couldn't reach that spot with my arm. I emailed the company I bought it from here on Amazon about my dilemma, and a lady called on the phone and had me walk through measuring lower.
She told me I needed this 36x15 balloon and I should put it in the fireplace smoke shelf. She mailed me the new larger size and a return envelope for my smaller balloon. She didn't even charge me the price difference (the larger one was more $). The new one worked great and closed off the flue. I was very grateful for the exceptional service.

I have a brick gas fireplace in a guest bedroom that doesn't have the fake log kit in it anymore. There is just a nub where the gas line ends. So I dont use the fireplace, and the trouble was there is not metal damper in there at all. I bought one of these flue balloons to basically plug the hole that is just sitting there open all the time. I blew up the balloon easy-shmeezy with an air mattress pump. (Yeah, im not huffin and puffin on this big balloon.) It made the room warmer, and that is all I wanted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing customer service, October 13, 2011
This review is from: Chimney Balloon® 36"x15" Inflatable Fireplace Draft Stopper (Large Chimney Pillow®) (Kitchen)
Purchased 36x15 balloon through their website. I had a very hard time getting it in place. I probably ended up scraping it in the process, because the balloon would not hold air for more than a few days. I emailed Chimney Balloon last night. Within 12 hours someone called me, walked through my chimney dimensions (which were a little unsual). He offered a free replacement with a custom sized balloon!

5.0 out of 5 stars I tried it, and it worked, December 20, 2010

I have a pain in the butt fireplace that lets in smoke smell in the summer and cold air when the weather is cool. I have tried jamming fiberglass up there, I have tried other types of chimney bladders and I have tried covering the top of the chimney... none of that worked.
I almost didn't want to try this chimney balloon thingy, but I called the company and talked to some lady there and she assured me I could get my money back (shipping and all)if I didn't like it. So i figured what the h**l. I did the measurements and bought the big one. I installed it.. and holy crap it worked! I don't use this fireplace anyway, so I am leaving it in there forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good product, but i should have price shopped first., May 13, 2011

We were recommended to this product from our chimney sweep. Our Chimney Balloon works very well. The floor around the fireplace and the hearth are noticeably not as cold as they were (previously it was like having a block of ice in the house) and the draft has all but stopped now that the balloon is in. I do see that the shipping for this on Amazon is costlier than other places on the web. I am disappointed I didnt notice that before.

5.0 out of 5 stars tough to measure but made the room much warmer, March 11, 2011
This review is from: Chimney Balloon® 36"x15" Inflatable Fireplace Draft Stopper (Large Chimney Pillow®) (Kitchen)
I have a wood fireplace with a steel dampner with a big ole handle. I had to measure the chimney and then put the balloon into the spot above the dampner. I must admit I got my hands dirty making the measurement, but that was the toughest part. When I got the balloon i just tucked it through the hole and then blew air into it. When it was tight I closed the valve and that was it. The measurement was actually tougher than putting it in. I wasnt sure if I did the measuring correct, so i called their help line and confirmed i did it right. I was surprised I actually got someone on the phone on a Sunday afternoon. After it was installed the room was much warmer and that was my main goal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jason at Chimney Ballon is a Great Tech Resource, November 18, 2011
This review is from: Chimney Balloon® 36"x15" Inflatable Fireplace Draft Stopper (Large Chimney Pillow®) (Kitchen)
I had a question about my vented gas log fireplace and found Chimney Balloon through a google search. I spoke with Jason on the phone for perhaps twenty minutes, and rather than trying to sell me anything, he answered my many questions about heat loss and efficiency with excellent advice. I still haven't bought anything, but if and when I need something in this area, I will definitely order from Jason's company, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them to anyone looking for solid answers rather than mere salesmanship.
Much appreciated,
Carl

5.0 out of 5 stars stopped the wasps from invading, September 20, 2011
This review is from: Chimney Balloon® 36"x15" Inflatable Fireplace Draft Stopper (Large Chimney Pillow®) (Kitchen)
I bought one of these fireplace balloons because i was having some trouble with wasps coming into my house through the fireplace. I tried keeping the wasps out with the fireplace damper and they kept getting in. I read a forum article about using these flue balloons to stop bugs, so i ordered a large one. I didnt measure first (like you are suppose to do), I just figured I would be better to get one that is too big rather than too small. The balloon worked well for keeping wasps out. I have no more trouble with them.

The plastic itself is transparent total garbage. No thicker than a sandwich bag. You even need to be careful where you lay it lest an animal or child would ever get hold of it. I can't believe I burnt $50+ on a bag with a plastic tube, and some rubber bands. Two words: "STEER CLEAR!"

3.0 out of 5 stars Expensive, installation difficult and effectiveness remains to be seen, October 8, 2011

This review is from: Chimney Balloon® 36"x15" Inflatable Fireplace Draft Stopper (Large Chimney Pillow®) (Kitchen)
I wanted to seal a 50-year-old fireplace that I never use, but that lets in a lot of cold air in the winter. I spent about $70 for a balloon and extension tube, plus another $15 for a folding carpenter's rule. Measuring and installing was a difficult and dirty process - very hard on the back and neck, and difficult to avoid safety glasses fogging up or ash in the eyes. When I blew up the bag it forced the damper shut, which made it difficult to close the valve, shove the valve above the damper, and shut the damper completely. It seemed that this thin bag would have to be incredibly tough to survive in this environment full of sharp metal and mortar edges and grit. This concerned me enough that I decided to also cap the chimney with a painted thick piece of exterior plywood, silicone sealed in place and weighted with heavy weights so it could not blow away, even if the silicone adhesive failed. The chimney cap cost me nothing, since I already had the materials, and was much easier and cleaner to install. So I'm not convinced that I needed to spend the $85 on the chimney balloon. The chimney balloon might be more appropriate for someone who burns fires once a month, and doesn't mind replacing the balloon every few years (assuming that the bag can last that long).
