About the Author

CHRISTOPHE BOESCH is an evolutionary biologist and the director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. After first visiting the Ivory Coast in 1976, he returned in 1979 to begin a long-term study of the Ta forest chimpanzees. He has published many papers and a number of books, includingWild Cultures: A Comparison Between Chimpanzee and Human Cultures. Concerned about the continuing deforestation in Africa, Christophe founded the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation to fight for their survival. Hedwige, his wife, says that Christophe has an uncanny ability to predict what the chimpanzees will do when he's following them in the forest.

I read a clipping about the movie, and it mentioned this book, so I came on amazon to purchase it. The book is lovely. Large, hard-bound, stunning photographs, and really transported me into the jungle, with its descriptions of the hardships and amazements which go along with spending so much time shooting stills and video for a feature film.

This was a fantastic book! I am a photographer and I loved reading about the experiences of the people making the film.
Very nice photos in book and lovely to feel as tho you are behind-the-scenes.

Worth getting in my opinion.

The photography, as expected for a Nat Geo book, is superb. The book tells of the great effort required to film this awesome documentary. From the building of the special residence/office to the care with which they photograph (keeping distance so as not to introduce foreign germs) it is magical to see this story come together. I love the pages that show each chimp (like a high school yearbook format) then beneath describes who on the crew loved that particular one and for what reason. What serendipity these filmmakers had, and deserved, when the little orphaned chimp was adopted by a male and lead chimpanzee. It captures sad as well as humorous moments. Because of the name of the book being simply "Chimpanzee" several of my friends have not been able to bring the title up in order to purchase it. Also, the film was shown for brief "special showings" and many folks missed seeing it. Not sure how to help them locate the book or future showings. It's delightful, and one can appreciate the book on its own merits without having to see the movie.
