Book Description

Stories to Go!

Chimps don't wear glasses
And zebras don't cook
And you won't see a kangaroo
reading a book.

So begins the sequel to Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers in which we find more animals in preposterous, hilarious situations. Laura Numeroff's understated text, combined with Joe Mathieu's vibrant art, creates a nonsensical world that will have readers in stitches -- and dreaming up their own characters and antics for this playful menagerie.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With outlandish illustrations that playfully contradict the rhyming text, this sequel to Dogs Don't Wear Sneakers boldly asserts that "pandas don't pole vault/ And camels don't sing/ And you won't find a chipmunk who'll ever be king," etc. Ages 4-8. (Oct.) r

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?The author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (HarperCollins, 1985) is back with a hilarious imagination stretcher. The rhymed text introduces an assortment of preposterous things that animals don't do. "Llamas don't shop," "giraffes don't drive cars," and "reindeer don't square dance." The vibrant acrylic and pencil illustrations abound with humor. Fully dressed animals with exaggerated expressions expand the text into the realm of the ridiculous that children love. "Zebras don't cook and you won't see a kangaroo reading a book" portrays a zebra in a messy kitchen covered with red sauce and a frowning kangaroo reading an upside-down cookbook. The brief text and lively pictures make this a sure hit with the story hour set. The ending, "Now just close your eyes and draw with your mind" can easily lead into an art or creative-writing activity.?Janet M. Bair, Trumbull Library, CT

4.0 out of 5 stars a fun, imaginative book, May 17, 2001
My son received this as a gift and adores it. While we don't read it every day anymore, it is still a favorite. I'd recommend this book for the 2-4 age range. The book goes through silly scenarios starting with chimps and going on to all kinds of different animals in other silly situations. The illustrations are excellent!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Funny Kid's Book, March 6, 2002
This book helps kids use their imaginations. It talks about animals doing wacky things like reindeer square dancing. They'll love the funny pictures of animals in weird situations. They can imagine their own funny stories. It's definetley a good beginner book.

CHIMPS DON'T WEAR GLASSES is a book written towards children illustrating how powerful one's imagination can be. Through a series of illustrations and text that covers the pictures, the book presents a world that would indeed be very wacky if chimps wore glasses. In such a world kangaroos read books, horses hang glide, mice are in the Boy Scouts, pandas pole vault, and many creatures obey a chipmunk who is king. The message of the book is very detailed and as written in the book is actually a bit confusing. Nevertheless, children will love looking at the book and all the crazy illustrations. Just don't ever get stuck by a giraffe on the interstate.
