Excellent Black Tea, January 12, 2010
My 1/4 pound order was in 2 bags, 2 ounces each. Light and moisture degrades tea; the packaging keeps it fresh.
This was my 1st tea from the Fujian Province and changed my concept of tea.
This is a calming tea.good with milk [I add Splenda, too]. It is best late in the day.
Most black teas have a lot of Assam [India]. GM's taste is lighter, with more body and an aftertaste.
The 2009 World Tea Championships granted Special Tea's Golden monkey 2nd place in Black teas.
There are many teas to try, so far this is my #1.
[Aside: Keemun is an excellent morning choice. Good Keemun is rare.
Twinings English Afternoon Tea, Tea Bags, 20-Count Boxes (Pack of 6) This has a Keemun and Ceylon. If you like this GM, but not the price try
Prince Of Wales Tea - 20 - Bag]
PS: 2nd order was not as good, but it is still a quality tea.

Utterly Unreliable - Packaging Issues - Fannings, October 21, 2009
This review is from: China Fujian Golden Monkey, 1/4lb. (Misc.)
Golden Monkey is the highly prized black tea counterpart of Silver Needle white tea. The flavor profile of a good invoice of golden monkey tea is memorable, characterized by a "good mouth feel" - natural cocoa notes (not chocolate), variously honeyed peach, malt, and, or fruit. It will be balanced, lack astringency and have a nice finish.
The quality of Special Teas' high-end teas has been wholly unreliable and inconsistent for the past few years.
Golden Monkey tea is a hand-processed tea originating from the Fujian and Yunnan provinces. This selection is from the Fujian province. Several years ago, it was difficult to locate a supplier that offered a superior Golden Monkey to Special Teas' stock.
This is no longer my experience. My last dozen selections and attempts to reclaim their former excellence, have been unsatisfactory.
To my experience, Special Teas' stock and customer assistance has become unreliable. Tea quality, consistency, freshness and availability have issues. Moreover, their customer service does follow through on their commitments, nor submit to simple shipping requests that preserve the quality of premium purchases. This may be due in part to their employee turn over. As such, they claim fewer high-end customers than in the past and this has also resulted in a change in their packaging.
Today, they open their two-pound wholesale bulk packages and break them into eight smaller four-ounce packets to re-sale Golden Monkey. Customers wishing to purchase a pound or more of tea will receive their order in multiples of small 4-ounce packets. Connoisseurs of this premium style tea who wish to purchase quantities larger than four ounces, (or present as a gift) will note that such packaging results in more handling, more crushed leaves, more fannings, and an inelegant harsh infusion.
