Book Description

February 15, 2011
An in-depth look at the forces and trends changing China and its place in the world

China has dominated the news for nearly a decade and will continue to grab headlines as it moves inexorably toward becoming the world's largest economy. It already has the largest middle class in the world; the most Internet users; the largest army; and is the world's largest polluter. Yet all this growth causes problems as China adapts to the laws of other lands in which it has investments; learns how to meet international guidelines and safety standards for its products; stretches its resources to the limit; and struggles to maintain stability and control over an increasingly restive population.

China Inside Out explores the social and economic forces unleashed by China's relentless drive to modernization. Bill Dodson presents the stories of average Chinese workers, along with interviews with experts interlaced with his own experiences. The end result is an insider's view of the forces reshaping China as it takes an increasingly prominent role in the new world order.

  • Looks at the trends reshaping China and reveals how China's place in the world is evolving
  • Written by an industry analyst, advisor, and business manager in China, who is also a columnist for the China Economic Review
  • Explains important changes for investors and business leaders interested in China

For business leaders, investors, and China watchers, China Inside Out offers a truly in-depth examination of China's changing role in the world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A first-rate guide to today's China. Gets under the skin of the emerging super power.
-- Jonathan Fenby, Author, Penguin History of Modern China

Bill Dodson's book is a wonderfully clear-headed, no-nonsense guide to the internal forces that are propelling China forward, backward, and sideways. It is properly assertive about the things that can be known, and open-minded about the many things that can't. Anyone who wants to understand China better will enjoy this book.
-- James Fallows, Author, Postcards from Tomorrow Square: Reports from China

Dodson presents each section of his book with an engaging balance of large- and small-scale narrative. China Inside Out merits its title by zooming in on the real power players in China's evolution-its citizens. Dodson clearly knows China and understands that its people, not its policies, have been and will continue to be China's defining force.
-- Dan Harris, Publisher, China Law Blog

An extraordinarily accurate, complete, and coherent depiction of the daily reality that China's 1.5 billion individuals confront, cope with, push back against, and ultimately-through extreme tenacity, resourcefulness, intelligence and courage, hallmarks of the Chinese identity and spirit-shape. Dodson's framework makes sense of and puts into perspective what foreign observers might otherwise find an overwhelming torrent of snapshots: he ends the need to surmise, based on scattered data and anecdotes, what structures underlie China's tectonic struggle to evolve.
-- Janet Carmosky, CEO, The China Business Network

Bill Dodson provides a reasoned and balanced ground level analysis of China's social and economic fault lines and stress points. There's no pulling of punches here as he concentrates on the often uncomfortable, but necessary, truths anyone connecting with China needs to know.
-- Paul French, Chief China Analyst, Access Asia Shanghai  and Co-author, Fat China: How Expanding Waistlines are Changing a Nation

A crisp and very readable introduction to the key issues driving change in China today. Recommended.
-- Graham Earnshaw, Publisher, China Economic Review

Bill Dodson provides a grown-up look at modern China and its growing pains, introducing some of real people there. It's a smooth, quick read. We predict this rising power's future at our peril; Dodson lays out a reasoned narrative. If you care about the China behind the label-the aspirations, challenges, and insecurities-give it a spin.
-- Scott Tong, Former China Bureau Chief, Marketplace Public Radio

Bill Dodson takes readers beyond the usual expats hubs of China and offers a wide view of the momentous trends boiling below and above the surface of China today.  With energy and insight, China Inside Out updates, often startlingly, much of what you think you know about the country.
-- Ted C. Fishman, Author, China, Inc. and Shock of Gray

Bill Dodson knows more about China business and society than just about anyone writing today. In China Inside Out Dodson does an outstanding job of connecting the dots from international headlines to middle class Chinese households. It has become accepted wisdom that China is an economic powerhouse, but this work helps to flesh out bare statistics and gets to the heart of what is driving 21st Century China-its people. In this ambitious work Dodson has identified the big trends that will push China to new levels of global influence-for good or ill-and analyzes how China will interact with the world and environment to shape its own future.
-- Andrew Hupert, Publisher, ChinaSolved.com and Adjunct Professor, NYU in Shanghai

With years of consulting experience in China, Bill Dodson not only studies China's trends, he lives them. Dodson is an astute observer of China's society and economy.
-- Rob Schmitz, China Bureau Chief, Marketplace, American Public Media

From the Inside Flap

China has dominated the news for nearly a decade now and will continue to grab the headlines as it moves inexorably towards becoming the world's largest economy. It already has the largest middle class in the world; the largest internet user population in the world; the largest army in the world; and has outstripped even America as the largest polluter in the world-all with pressing consequences for humanity. But China's Communist Party will not rule the world any time soon. It is still learning to adapt to the laws of other lands in which it has overseas investments; feels out how to meet international guidelines and standards of product safety and customer service quality; seeks to maintain stability and control of an increasingly rambunctious society; and deals with the dearth of land, water and mineral resources already sapping its economic development prospects.

China Inside Out: 10 Irreversible Trends Reshaping China and its Relationship with the World investigates the social and economic forces unleashed in China's drive to modernization. Bill Dodson presents the stories of average Chinese workers, along with interviews with topical experts, interlaced with his own experiences. The end result is an insider's view into the dramatic forces reshaping China, its identity, and its place in a new world order as it elbows America and Europe aside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Accurate, a Delightful Read! May 5, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I just returned to the US after living in China for 6 years. Like the writer, Mr. Dodson, I experienced the Lower Yangtze River Delta firsthand. Like the writer, my wife is a local Chinese. And, like the accounts in the book, my life there was full of fascinatingly unique daily interactions with Chinese people that prove there are powerful trends shaping China's future. And this is what the book excels at: illustrating immense forces that are and will continue to transform China; using well-researched facts but also vividly portrayed and entertaining anecdotes. I laughed out loud while reading a section on a home repairman - having had an almost identical and convoluted experience when a pipe burst in our apartment. Just like in the book, I've lived under a hazy sky, had a doctor consultation with a dozen bystanders looking over my shoulder, and experienced Chinese nationalism first-hand when friends threatened to boycott my wedding over a joke I made about Tibet! And while the effects of many of the 10 trends outlined in the book seem unavoidable and potentially catastrophic, it doesn't read like a "gloom and doom" prognostication that many Westerners choose to bring to books on China. The author displays a level of light-heartedness, and even optimism at times; hoping that Chinese society can overcome these immense challenges and secure a better life for itself; despite government machinations. To get a sense of what life really is and will be like in China in the near future, do yourself a favor and pick up China Inside Out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book on the psyche and development of China June 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read this after reading "China Fast Forward" I liked that book better but both are valuable resources. The insight and method in which it is conveyed keep the reader interested without seeming to be text book format. I liked the personal stories and reflection on events and I am excited to see what the future holds for China.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right on point March 2, 2013

This book could well have been the class syllabus for a two-week class I took on China Today although the professor had it listed as one of about 30 the class might want to look at. Easy reading and brought out many "facts" daily media outlets are too shallow to even consider in their coverage. This I find sad, especially when modern "media" has been such an affront to old-guard brutality in the evolution of a closed society.

Living in HK for the past 15 years I found this book an interesting read and indeed some of the trends are happening right now - especially with regards to the Remninbi but also with the migrant workers. If you are a China watcher then this is an enjoyable and easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book On China November 7, 2011

This is a very interesting and educational book. I spent 3 years in China and spent most of my time in bemused astonishment (and more often frustration) at what was happening around me. This book explained a lot of the Chinese thought patterns, government workings, economic issues and other aspect of everyday Chinese life that confused me during those 3 years. I just wish this book had been out before I went over there because it would have made my life easier and less frustrating. But now it all makes sense to me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, astute, witty, and well-informed August 20, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
For anyone thinking about doing business in China, or just seeking to understand the changes that drive the most populous nation on Earth, this book is a gem. It is well-written, very easy to read, and contains real insight into the real China. Dodson starts from anecdotes about his own life, his friends and acquaintances, or just newsworthy anecdotes, then zooms out to allow us to understand the greater context of their situation, and even suggests how situations may evolve. It's like having a cross-country car ride with an expert who points out the landmarks as you drive by, then tells you the story behind them, in a way Westerners can relate.

We learn Dodson is an American who lives in China, has a Chinese wife and infant son. His situation has enabled him to write this book as a bridge between cultures, and the result is particularly successful. Like students of the mysterious East in the old days would look to Lin Yutang and Inazio Nitobe as guides to provide understanding of the "inscrutable Asian folk", modern-day businessmen will find this insightful and acute look into China of great value.
