Book Description

June 1, 2004
Digby Walton was once the heir to an English pottery company. Now in old age he contemplates the history of that company as he reflects upon the modern world. His own heir, his son Theo, would rather ignore history completely and lose himself in smoky jazz clubs with his trumpet. Theo wants to live entirely inside the perfection of songs, but will reality let him?

Meanwhile Digby's next-door neighbor, Daisy Gresham, famed as one of the great film beauties of her day, seeks her own elusive son, who is perilously engaged in the international anarchist movement.

Alan Wall's novel weaves back and forth between the present and the twentieth century that formed it, its wars and industries, industries that once propelled an empire but now appear in permanent decline, asking constantly what art contributes to life and whether life can ever survive for long without it. In the tradition of Louis Begley and John Updike, China is a novel about life and looking back.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* This masterfully written, thoughtful novel tells the story of Digby Wilton, whose forebears founded the famous Wilton Pottery in the English Midlands. Digby, whose tastes run to handcrafted pottery rather than commercially viable, mass-produced china, quickly becomes uninterested in his family's business. Aimless, he marries a much younger wife, Victoria, who makes his life a misery, even though she bears him a son and heir, Theo, a ne'er-do-well whose career as a jazz trumpeter has never taken off and who can't hold a job, forge successful relationships with women, or please his father. The story switches effectively between Digby's and Theo's perspectives, between past and present, and offers a number of provocative reflections on capitalism, love, war, modernity, art, and language. The book is as philosophical as it is emotional and as funny as it is painful. Slow going at first, the plot picks up quickly and moves through humor and heartbreak to a deeply affecting conclusion. For readers of literary fiction who enjoy being challenged, enriched, and stimulated, Wall's novel will prove deeply satisfying. Emily Melton

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable, and Just About Perfect!, June 1, 2006

This review is from: China: A Novel (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully done mini-generation saga of 2 English families, one with old money in the English Chinaware trade, the other a 1960's acting/photo divorced couple. Both have male offspring with interests completely different than the parents:jazz trumpet, and Anarchistic politics. Any short summary does this book a severe injustice, but this is also a novel of ideas: music, industry and commerce, the English countryside and resort scene, collecting and finance, and so on. Just a Fine book deserving of much attention!

This review is from: China: A Novel (Hardcover)
This is a fine, complex novel by an outstandingly good writer. He deals with a whole variety of ideas including Western materialism, the collecting instinct and the function of the artist. I read this twice and will read it again soon.
