This collection is a superb introduction to authentic traditional Chinese music. Unlike some academic ethnomusicological efforts, it boasts a natural sound while remaining accessible. It is never pretentious. The producers have worked diligently to provide a well-rounded cross-section of music. If you think you might like Chinese music but never tried it, this is the one to start with. I highly recommend it.

For those who have to teach a unit on China in school! One of the best things about this 3 CD set is that it has a well written introduction to the music, and also introductions to the various instruments, which are excellent material for any primary-secondary school class study of China.

For the money, this is a diverse and highly comprehensive sampler of Chinese music. This music is, at times, enchanting, exotic, soothing and very much linked to the natural environment as it often evokes sounds of rain, birds or breezes. This box set contains three full CDs of music plus a very detailed booklet that describes the music and artists. It reminds me of the very memorable time I spent in China and meeting the very interesting and friendly Chinese people.

After I heard this set I realized how much I had to learn about Chinese music. I used to think of it as loud and blaring, and this set proves that Chinese music is subtle, varied, and exciting. This is easy and exciting listening. Like Chinese food, in an hour you will want to hear it again.
