Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Anna Fields has her work cut out for her reading this collection of essays about the potential impact China will have on the world as an economic powerhouse. Many of the essays offer a glimpse into the corruption and power struggles inherent in the Chinese success story, and add insight into the world of Chinese business. Fields's voice conveys with authority the pro-business messages sprinkled throughout the work but fails to remove any of the dryness of the writing, a nearly impossible task given the technical aspects of the material. That said, the ups and downs of her melodic voice are enough to keep an interested listener tuned in to the weighty subject. We hear about China in the news but many of us are still ignorant as to its overriding influence on American economy and foreign relations. This book on CD does a uniquely excellent job of educating the listener as to the grand importance of China on the Western World, but also the great dissimilarities between Eastern and Western cultures. I bought this product for a friend who was heading over for Study Abroad--and they said it was like a crash course on China as it relates to the world stage. I'd recommend it to American Businesswomen, travelers, and simply those looking to inform themselves as to different cultures and global relations. This program succinctly summarizes symbiotic American-Chinese relations, and the subsequent head-butting.

An interesting micro-historic viewpoint. Good background to compare to more modern books. However, the tone is extremely professorial and not very interesting overall. Better to listen to the "Elephant and the Dragon", a few years more up to date. Provides perspective from several years ago, which is a good juxtaposition to current times.
