Editorial Reviews

Review

"This brilliant book helps us understand why the Chinese and the design-minded in China think and act as they do, what their design scene is today and what the historic development behind the current situation has been like. I would highly recommend China's Design Revolution to anyone considering hiring or collaborating with designers in China, or with the increasing amount of Chinese designers all around the world."--Anna Valtonen, Rector, Professor, Umeå Institute of Design, Umeå University, Sweden

More About the Author

At the age of 48, I put the "American Dream" on hold and moved to Hong Kong. I worked throughout Asia and had amazing experiences that changed my life. I learned as much about the West (how we are) as I did about the East (how they are). The richness of the Asian cultures will stay with me. I had the opportunity to do research on the design boom in China and after 4 years was able to publish China's Design Revolution with MIT Press.

I am currently the Dean of the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology. Prior to that I was a Director, then Dean at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University for 7 years.

We all know what influences Asian art has had on the world. This book details the beauty of China's design through the ages and where it stands today. It is evident that the author has researched this topic thoroughly as a result of her first hand knowledge and experience in China. This book should not only be on a designer's bookshelf, but on everyone's bookshelf!

You need only have an interest in China to appreciate Lorraine's writing. Having taught in China in 1993 I was impressed with how concisely and accurately Lorraine captured the transition many of my former students made from second to third generation Chinese. Books like this are a must read for those developing an understanding of China and its people.

Lorraine Justice speaks from experience as she explains China's Design Revolution. She lived in China for 7 years and taught design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute, which brought her up close and personal with the cultural paradoxes she discusses in her book. As any traveler discovers, we learn as much about ourselves as we learn about others, and her interpretation of how she saw the West in a new way upon living in the East will resonate with anyone who has been in Asia. Lorraine taught and worked with designers and corporate leaders of the "third" and "fourth" generations she describes in the book. Seeing their homes and interviewing them about their motivations and aspirations informed her interpretations. As the Chinese and US economies are now intertwined, anyone who does business in China (and your company might be doing that and you don't even know it), should read this book. The huge Chinese consumer market is more complex than US companies expected, as recent big box retailer retreats indicate. Brand development depends on understanding the generations outlined here. She uses easy-to-understand terminology and her trend analysis presents the bullet points any marketer should know about making, buying and selling products there. Her students and colleagues move back and forth between China and the US, so prepare yourself to encounter the members of this network --- read this short, yet very meaty, book.

A great book with insight to the intricacies of design in China's history and culture. Every design discipline should read Lorraine's book to appreciate China's design's competition with there culture, politics, revolution, and harmony expectations of the human spirit.
