China has enjoyed considerable economic growth recently, in spite of a problematic legal system. Randall Peerenboom asserts that China is in transition from rule by law to a version of rule of law, although not a "liberal democratic" version. Editorial Reviews

Review

"Peerenboom gives the rule of law in China a truly comprehensive, magisterial coverage in this book...it will occupy a central place in the literature on legal development in China for years to come." American Journal of Sociology

"Randall Peerenboom's China's Long March towards Rule of Law is an exhaustive compendium on the legal and political system of the People's Republic of China. [It is] a great ride. It could serve as one of the texts in courses on PRC law in both law schools and other venues."
China Review International

Book Description

China has enjoyed considerable economic growth recently, in spite of a problematic legal system--a system which has been poorly understood by scholars. Randall Peerenboom argues that China is in transition from rule by law to a version of rule of law, although not a 'liberal democratic' version. As well as students and scholars of the law, political science, sociology and economics of China, this book will interest business professionals, policy advisors, and governmental and non-governmental agencies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Any China Watcher, August 9, 2003

This review is from: China's Long March toward Rule of Law (Paperback)
I am fortunate enough to have been a student of Professor Peerenboom's at the UCLA School of Law where he practically teaches the contents of this book in his Comparative Law: China course.

While I'm not the biggest fan of his thin/thick rule of law approach, or of his categorization of China's possible rule of law systems into four groups, plus a 'Rule by Law' alternative, this theoretical framework largely succeeds in introducing the reader to China's somewhat byzantine legal system, and the enormous number of problems China's legal reformers face in its overhaul.

Professor Peerenboom is at his best when he takes the reader through the different elements that compose the Chinese legal world, and he does a fantastic job of imparting to the reader these complexities and how they all interrelate/integrate.

What I most admire about Professor Peerenboom's scholarship is how his analyses incorporate a multitude of highly complicated aspects overlooked to some degree by almost everyone else.
