5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music from the Far East worthy of your attention
This cd in part was instrumental in my understanding and now great delight in traditional forms of Chinese music. I also have a cd of nice Japanese bamboo flute tunes, but I far prefer this delightful collection of melodies (my favourite is the first track, but they're all gems) that spring from one of the most ancient instruments in the world in one of the world's most...

2.0 out of 5 stars Very good sometimes, too electronic at others.
I was, overall, disappointed by this CD. There are many good reviews here, but they generally overpraise. Tracks 4 through 8 have too much synthesizer for my ears. A major highlight is track 9, The Crab and the Egret, but interestingly, the flute is accompaniment to the wondrous Chinese percussion. 5.0 out of 5 stars Little piece of our daughter's heritage in our car, July 2, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this because I thought this cd would be nice to listen to in the car while on out and about. I love that our 2 1/2 year old daughter who is from China loves this cd and will request it "Chinese Flute" please. This is just one way to keep her heritage alive and expose her to different kinds of music beyond the Wiggles & Lilo & Stitch CD.

I would have liked to have had more information on the songs like what province of China. But not having this information really does not lessen the rating of 5 stars! Our family thinks this is an excellent cd.

3.0 out of 5 stars Relaxing but artificial, October 14, 2003
I ran across this CD at a store and bought it without knowing too much about it. Unfortunately, I did not notice the "synthesizer" reference in the credits. I have nothing against synthesizers, but I was expecting authentic bamboo flute music, and this isn't really it. It's not really the same without period instruments.

3.0 out of 5 stars Generally Pleasing, September 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Chinese Bamboo Flute Music (Audio CD)
Most Chinese Flute CD's are good relaxing CD's, and this one isn't any different. Generally good numbers, with the last track ("The Crab and the Egret") a definite highlight with its gonzo percussion. A few too many songs disappear without making any impression at all, and the opening track ("Capriccio for Chinese Flute") sounds more like an Irish Spring or Lucky Charms commercial than anything Chinese. All told, a good disc for the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice sound, December 22, 2000

This review is from: Flute Music (Audio Cassette)
A Westerner might shy away from Eastern Music, but this is not twangy, and is very pleasant to the Western ear. Easy listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good choice of traditional music., September 12, 2005

Interesting combination of musical selection with excellant high orchestral standards. The differing flute melodies seemed well integrated in each selection. I thoroughly enjoy listening to the CD again and again; repetition isn't a problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, March 29, 2004
The music is pure and melodious and mainly involves bamboo flutes although, "in some cases [they are] accompanied by Chinese fiddle, guitar, percussion and synthesizer."

The flute-playing is quite enjoyable; although the number of pieces on the cd are quite small, amounting to a total of about 45 minutes. While THE IMPERIAL OFFICER ON HORSEBACK GALLOPING BY and THE FLOWER OF HSIN-JANG are probably the most complicated pieces, A TAYAL FOLK SONG, with its sharp, clear notes and the more somber and softer MAIDENS OF THE TEA MOUNTAIN & CHATTING WITH AN OLD FRIEND BY THE WINDOW are most enjoyable.

Aside from the brevity of the whole, the main complaint I have is that the producers did not give us any history or context behind the music. I would certainly have been interested in finding out the story behind the Maidens and Tea Mountain or the Tayal folksong.

Still, quite relaxing.

Believe it or not I discovered this CD at my dentist's office where we could choose from a list of about 30 cds to listen to while having dental work done. Now I choose it every time I go, and have finally even decided to buy it for myself (after 2 1/2 years & 6 visits!). I agree with other reviewers: great while preparing or eating an Asian meal, but my 3 year old son loves it, too! Glad to have some diversity in our music collection, and at a great price!!!
