About the Author
Caroline Self has studied Asian brush painting for 30 years. She holds a degree in art from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in art education and sculpture from San Diego State University. She has taught brush painting for over twenty-five years, and has studied traditional brush painting with teachers in Japan, China and Taiwan.
Susan Self studied art in college and on trips to Europe and Asia, often accompanying her mother. She has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from UC San Diego.

Chinese Brush Painting is not well known by western artists. This book gives the new reader an exceptional grounding in the theroy and practice of a painting style that combines delicacy and spirtual context seldom found in western art forms. The authors present a wide variety of illustrations and work practice to discover the depth of methodology and meaning in this thousand year old art style.

Chinese brush art is a special way of painting that uses ink, paper and imagination to create art, and beginners now have access to this thousand-year-old art form through a step-by-step guide that closely follows traditional Chinese methods. From simple materials painting traditional subjects with imagination, this is an excellent starting point recommended for any library where introductory painting in general is of interest, and Chinese art in particular is a focus.
