5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
This is a great book for beginners as Ning Yeh shows how to paint several popular subjects step by step. Subjects include bamboo, orchid, camellia and panda. I especially like the sections on painting leaves and camellia, as the techniques can be applied to many different floral subjects.

1.0 out of 5 stars chinese brush painting and instructional guide
Be sure it is the instructional guide not the students guide. The students guide is just an answer key, a companionto the instructional guide, with no information.

This is a great book for beginners as Ning Yeh shows how to paint several popular subjects step by step. Subjects include bamboo, orchid, camellia and panda. I especially like the sections on painting leaves and camellia, as the techniques can be applied to many different floral subjects.

Ning's painting style is fairly distinctive and is not as loose and spontaneous as some painters, but is really lovely. Nevertheless, his approach helps to show beginners how they can use the brush to construct the different strokes comprising the subjects. He also shows examples of common mistakes for the strokes, which helps you to learn quicker. I teach Chinese brush painting to beginners and have found this book to be a great reference and I also recommend it to my students.

He also includes a section on how to wet-mount a painting (applying the rice paper to a heavier backing to remove wrinkles and make it less susceptible to tearing). I have found this information to be invaluable and not readily-found elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous price, October 28, 2011
This review is from: Chinese Brush Painting an Instructional Guide (Paperback)
On Oriental art supply site this book sells for $24.95. I am interested in Ning Yeh books and did a further search than on your site and was shocked to see the difference in price. This should be reviewed.

5.0 out of 5 stars chinese brush painting, December 8, 2009

This is a great book for a beginner who is trying brush painting all by them selves. It has a great reference of what you need to buy to start out and even a list of more expensive brushes that are worth their price. It shows you what you are painting step by step as well as shows pictures of what other people did to help you with composition. It starts with the four gentlemen of brush painting and a couple of things you can paint using these brush strokes. It also explains mounting techniques for the painting and how to frame it.A good beginner book. And the best thing is he has a video/dvd series that can show you how to paint different things. Anything made by the author is worth buying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I thought, June 20, 2008
This review is from: Chinese Brush Painting an Instructional Guide (Paperback)
I thought the book would have more illustrations, step by step on how to actually draw; so a little disappointed
