Each Longevity plaque is hand carved from a single piece of Camphor wood. In addition to the longevity character, the intricate design also incoporates bats for good fortune and ancient Chinese coins. In China the bat symbolizes "good fortune," because it's pronunciation is very similar, differing only in tone. The likeness of coins is used in Feng Shui to attract wealth.
Champhor wood comes from a slow growing evergreen tree of the same name. Native to China and most of Asia, it is a softwood once reserved only for the carving of religious icons. Its grain may be of a single consistent color or streaked with dark viens. Camphor wood is naturally pest resistant and is used for chest and cabinet making as it acts as a natural moth repellent. It is also used for silver chests as the fumes help prevent silver from tarnishing.
Each wall plaque has a brass hanger on the back.
