Great little set for beginners for the price. I would note that it does NOT come with instructions included and you should have some handy either from the net or order a book to go along with it.

This one is must nicer than it had a right to be at that price. The board is a perfect size. The pieces are gorgeous. The unit is solid and well-made. It could easily command a price twice what it's going for, and it would still be a great value.

As has been pointed out, it does not come with instructions, nor does it claim to. An excellent book is Chinese Chess for Beginners. If you're just starting out, or if you want to play on the go, you won't find better than this little set. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Product as described. Magnetic not EXTREMELY strong but of enough strength. Manual not included. Not sure why someone would expect to get a manual though. Travel size.

I bought this set November 2011 for $8.99. It's a 5-star for this price. The board and the pieces look sharp. The magnetic pieces do stay on the board when the board is accidentally shaken. It comes with a plastic case for the pieces, so when you take the set to a park or on the road, you can put the captured pieces in the case.. avoid losing them.

This Chinese chess set was purchased to learn how to play the game. I intend to play more on the internet though and also purchase the BIGGER rosewood set offered on Amazon later. This set makes the intermediate grade but the magnets on the pieces are a joke compared to other magnetic sets I've purchased. I can offer no advice on purchasing this unit other than it's appropriate value for the price. ENJOY THE GAME though, it's a REAL CHANGE from regular chess play.......

The pieces are solid and nice. The board/case seems to be holding well to frequent use. The magnetic property is weak; it works perfectly on a horizontal level but doesn't work on the refrigerator door. So I bought a square galvanized steel plate (12" x 12"), painted on the lines, and mounted on my wall. The small magnets inside the pieces attach well to this galvanized steel plate on a vertical position.

I have for the longest time wanted to play Xiangqi. I am a huge fan of the game as a whole and am beginning to understand the game a little more. The set here is well worth the price and was packaged nicely. Though other reviewers mentioned it had not instructional booklet I found that it had one. I would like to correct one small mistake made in it though that YMI seems to make in its description of the game. If a person perpetually checks or chases their enemies pieces unless they break the cycle the checker not the checked person forfeits the game. This is a huge distinction and is more than likely a small translation error, I assume. Save that the pieces are quite pretty and stored well. The magnet is a little weak overall yet still holds the pieces to the board. For its price it is a complete steal, also look up the Jade set by YMI if you would like a higher quality Xiangqi set that is also magnetic.
