Product Description

Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima) Uses The nuts are edible, and the tree is widely cultivated in eastern Asia; the nuts also provide a significant food source for wildlife. Physical Characteristics : A decidious Tree growing to 25 m (82ft 0in). It is hardy to zone 4. It is in flower in July, and the seeds ripen in October. The flowers are monoecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but both sexes can be found on the same plant) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil.The plant prefers acid and neutral soils..It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought. Growing Info: Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours Stratification: cold stratify for 60 days Germination: sow 1-2" deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed Other: can be fall sown without stratification.
