This work is a great introduction to Chinese civilization and helps the reader to get into the Chinese mind and mentallity. Great if you want an overview but the timespan it covers is so huge that it can not deal with any one time in too much detail.
I found Chinese Sketches: Life in 19th Century China very useful for 19th century China as it is a first-hand account.

I am not a huge fan of Chinese history, so I can't tell you if you will like this book from that perspective. However, I am a college student that had to write a ten page history paper on China. I bought this book because I needed primary sources that covered foreign relations in China during certain dynasties. I was very pleased to find many useful sources for my paper, and I can tell that there are many more useful sources for other categories of Chinese history.

So basically, if you frequently find yourself in situations that require you to quote and cite historical Chinese documents, this is probably a good book to add to your library. I know that I will keep this book for a long time, because I have another Chinese history class in the Fall :)

Bought for my daughter in college; it's required for her course.
She tells me it's a bit dry at first but then picks up and is quite thorough in the coverage of the subject matter.

An excellent way for China experts or the new and curious to look at Chinese history - translated original texts from turtle shell predictions four thousand years old to marriage contracts 700 years old.

direct translation of the Chinese Classics, some of the articles are hard to understand without any explanations. Not a very interesting book to read.
