Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-9--A complete and largely evenhanded account of the "Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution." Pietrusza begins with a brief summary of Chinese history since the fall of the last emperor in 1911. (Omitted is any mention of Chiang Kai-shek's reluctance to fight the Japanese during World War II. The Communists' willingness to engage the Japanese gave them a moral authority among the Chinese people, a fact that Americans may not yet appreciate.) The first two chapters sketch the early history of the Chinese Communist party and the People's Republic, laying the background for the epic struggle by Mao Zedong to consolidate his power. Beginning in 1965, Mao sought to defeat his challengers within the Communist leadership, and to this end encouraged young people to go on a rampage of violence and destruction aimed at wiping out old ideas and foreign influences. Subsequent chapters detail the rise of the Red Guards, the young people who ran amok, and Mao's use of the army to get them back under control. Mao's death, Deng Xiaoping's rise to power, and the 1989 demonstration at Tiananmen Square are covered. Direct quotes are footnoted, sources consulted are listed, and further reading is suggested. Black-and-white photographs, maps, and boxed quotes from various sources enliven the presentation. Useful information for students researching modern Chinese history.
