5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Reference Work on Chinese Export Silver, June 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Chinese Export Silver, Seventeen Eighty-Five to Eighteen Eighty-Five (Hardcover)
This book contains complete references with photographs of samples of Chinese Export Silver made from 1785 to 1885. The text is scholarly and includes detailed photo samples of objects by a number of makers. Photos of the maker's mark and artist's chop, make identification of these beautifully decorated silver pieces a breeze. Contains much information that you just can't find anywhere else. The Museum of the America China Trade (now the Peabody Essex Museum in Essex, MA which published this book has a marvellous 6,000+ piece collection which may help in determining provenance. With this text you can usually find the approximate date of manufacture, the silversmith, the maker, and the address of his shop! Provenance of the American trade in Chinese Silver is fully detailed and documented in this volume. This reference is required ownership for antique dealers and silver collectors. Find it. Buy it.
