Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Liu discusses the philosophy of qi and the practice of qigong, then presents a 20-minute routine consisting of 18 qigong harmony exercises that he recommends performing three times daily. Photographs sequentially demonstrate each of the 18 exercises, which involve chest expansion, arm movement, head turning, and relaxed foot motion. Liu also introduces and explains additional qigong harmony exercises. For those interested in learning to execute these basic classical Chinese health exercises, this is a good starting point. Sue-Ellen Beauregard

Review

This treatise on the Chinese study of life energy presents two sets of simple exercises which can improve tone and psychic energy patterns. This is presented as an alternative to more aggressive and singular Western approaches, presenting a set of routines which emphasize breathing and posture along with revitalizing movements designed to relieve physical and mental stress. Step-by-step black and white photos throughout demonstrate positions and routines. -- Midwest Book Review

3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate, August 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Chinese Fitness: A Mind/Body Approach: Qigong for Healthy and Joyful Living (Qigong - Health & Healing) (Paperback)
This book presents a very physical form of Qigong (Chi Kung) that seems at first more like calisthenics. The descriptions of the moves are sometimes hard to follow, but there are many photographs that illustrate the moves. Particularly helpful is the appendix that shows all of the major meridians and the points on them.

This is one of the few books I've seen that focuses on Qigong from a medicinal perspective. The author lists which exercises may be performed for specific ailments. It is a down-to-earth book that gives basic information, but its drawback is that it begins to touch upon deeper issues, such as the five elements, and then abrubtly moves on.
