5.0 out of 5 stars Best Chinese flash cards yet, April 30, 2009

This review is from: Chinese in a Flash Volume 3 (Tuttle Flash Cards) (Cards)
This series of four boxes is the largest and most useful of the three sets of Chinese flash cards that I have attempted to use this year.

On one side these cards present:
-- the simplified Hanzi and corresponding Pinyin pronunciation and English
-- the Hanzi radical under which Chinese dictionaries list the character and the set of component radicals in the character
-- an example of use in Hanzi, Pinyin and English
-- a series of multi-character words using this character, where each line presents one such multi-character word in Hanzi, Pinyin and English.

On the other side these cards present the simplified and, when different, the traditional Hanzi character, the stroke order for the simplified character, and the simplified Hanzi for the series of multi-character words that are defined on the first side of the card. Together these enable self-test of Hanzi-to-Pinyin and Hanzi-to-English for both the single Hanzi character of the card and for those multi-character words whose pronunciations and definitions are on the reverse.

Each side of the card also gives the card number (of a total of 1792 cards in Volumes 1-4), simplifying card sorting and indexed computerized references where that is desired.

Chinese in a Flash - Volume 1, 2, 3 and 4

As an additional tool to learn Mandarin Chinese characters these flashcards are excellent made and very easy in use. Each volume offers 448 character flash cards and 1792 compounds words.

On each individual flashcard you can find on the front side:
- Large print of the character
- Stroke order
- Four possible (and frequently used) words using that character
- A card number for easy ordering and traceability

On each individual flashcard you can find on the back side:
- Smaller print of the character (with pinyin and translation)
- Radical
- Character component
- Example of using that character in a phrase (with pinyin and translation)
- The four words using that character - as printed on the front side (with pinyin and translation)
- The card number

The 4 volumes offer in total 1792 characters and about 7168 words.

Each volume has also a booklet that allows you to search on pinyin, character or translation. Volume 1 starts with more frequently used words and the volumes built up on that. All are printed in easy to read fonts by the way.

This is a really great tool for the serious student of Mandarin Chinese. Great designed and superb in use!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice cards., April 10, 2007

These are nice cards, easy to use, great to learn pronunciations. But, if they're not for learning meanings of words, then leave off of the meager examples. Otherwise, add some more meaningful examples and make them a little bigger.
