5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Nail-Biting Psychological Thriller, February 3, 2004
This review is from: Chinese Girl Hb (Hardcover)
Stone Lewis has been out of prison and back in Hull for six weeks after serving the last eleven years for killing the bodyguard of Shooter Wilde, the man who had slashed his mother's face. Shooter is the gangster who runs Hull's underworld and he made sure Stone didn't have an easy time of it in prison. The gangs rapes left mental scars, the disfiguring tattoos on his face given to him by his fellow inmates left scares for the whole world to see. Stone wants a normal life, but he also wants revenge on the man who scared his mother and is responsible for his tattooed face.

On the way home one night he finds a man running from his doorway, leaving behind a battered unconscious woman, who Stone initially thinks is a Chinese girl. Rather than calling the police, he brings her inside and decides to care for her himself, convinced if he gets the police involved they'll think he did it.

He goes through her possessions, finds that her name is Virginia Bradshaw, who has come back to Hull from California. He reads letters that have been sent to her from her friend Juliet, finds that Ginny used to share a flat with Juliet. Juliet has suddenly disappeared, Ginny has come back to find out why, has asked questions, has apparently gotten beaten for her trouble. Stone falls for Ginny and soon figures that Shooter has to be responsible for her problems as well as his own. It looks like they have a common enemy.

John Baker, author of the excellent Sam Turner mysteries, has turned his pen to a psychological thriller that had me biting my nails as I wandered around inside a violent man's head. Stone wants to change, but can he? This, for me, was a delightful, though somewhat grim, read that I highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very different, September 1, 2010
This review is from: Chinese Girl Pb (Paperback)
What an unusual book! I liked it because it doesnt have a grand scheme of mass murder or nation against nation - instead it is ordinary lower class people struggling with what could be real life situations, but no less traumatic for the persons involved. Probably these sort of things are happening every day all over the world.

And like in real life, sometimes things don't work out as you would have expected. This book has an ending that I never would have anticipated.

I did find it just a little bit slow in parts - but since I like my novels to be fast paced, it might be exactly right for other readers.
