5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great concise handbook on Chinese patent remedies
Jake Fratkin's book on Chinese pill and extract remedies is one of my desk-side references. It gives several names for most remedies along with recommended uses and dosages.Highly recommended for students of acupuncture or any aspect of Oriental medicine because ancient herbal combinations are made from ingredients that help maintain health and balance. 3.0 out of 5 stars misleading version
The book content was pretty much what I expected. I'd seen the hardcover version, which is what I thought I was buying. The content is the same except that the illustrations are in black and white, unlike the hardcover version where they are in color. My disapointment wasn't in the book itself as much as it was with the dealer who neglected to state that it was the...

Studying the combinations helps you to understand how mind and body work together according to Chinese medicine. I use the book as a quick reference when writing articles. It is one of the favorite sources that I list in ASIAN HEALTH SECRETS and PERSONAL RENEWAL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of All the Guides to Chinese Patent Medicines, My Favorite., October 22, 2001

Fratkin has done an excelleny job of offering a guide to the sometimes murky realm of Chinese patented herbal compounds. This volume has helped me navigate the aisls of local herb shops and locate bone bruise medicine with the aid of the non-English speaking shop clerk. I especially like this guide because it includes a list of ingrediants, and shows what percentage of each herb, animal, or mineral is included.

The first and best book of it's kind. Others have followed but this is still a highly useable guide after more than 20 years. Great for both those who are new to Chinese Medicine and those familiar. A great work that has added greatly to the spread of Chinese Herbal Medicine.

3.0 out of 5 stars misleading version, June 28, 2011

The book content was pretty much what I expected. I'd seen the hardcover version, which is what I thought I was buying. The content is the same except that the illustrations are in black and white, unlike the hardcover version where they are in color. My disapointment wasn't in the book itself as much as it was with the dealer who neglected to state that it was the softcover version. The hardcover price stated on the cover is $75. I paid $25 for this book, thinking it was the hardcover, and the list price on the softcover says $17.95. So I was basically taken for almost ten bucks. Nowhere did it say it was the softcover version, which I was unaware even existed.
