The Chinese began to emigrate to the United States in significant numbers at the time of the California Gold Rush. By 1880 some 100,000 Chinese immigrants were living in this country, the vast majority in California. In that state and in other western states they encountered severe hostility, manifested in numberous racially discriminatroy state laws. The articles and essays in this volume examine the law's impact on the Chinese immigrant community and their response to racial discrimination.
