One cold winter morning, the sudden entrance of a Chinese boy brandishing a knife rudely interrupts Father Martin s ceremony. The boy, Tang, is filthy and confused. As Josie Welford tricks him into releasing the weapon, they all realize that they face another problem - the impossible language barrier. The majority of the congregation fuss over him, each bringing something that will be of use to the boy s survival as they keep him in the church away from the public eye. What will happen if the story gets out that they are harboring an illegal immigrant? The cultural divide is magnified as they struggle to understand Tang's habits and behaviors. With his future hinging on his past, Josie has to make the community work together to help Tang - she is praying that he is innocent and she is not getting herself ever deeper into trouble.

About the Author
Prize-winning short-story writer Judith Cutler is the author of two acclaimed series of crime novels set in Birmingham. The Dying series features amateur sleuth Sophie Rivers, while in her police procedural series Inspector Kate Power lives up to her name. One-time Secretary of the Crime Writers' Association, Judith has taught Creative Writing at Birmingham University, and has run occasional writing courses elsewhere. Now a full-time writer, she lives near Canterbury with husband and crime-writer Edward Marston.
