To many people "blue and white" is virtually synonymous with the entire range of Chinese porcelain with a large number regarding the ubiquitous "Willow Pattern" as the main, if not the only decorative motif. The truth is vastly different in that the history of blue and white over the last 600 years has far more to say and thus is deserving of serious study. With the exception of a brief period when it fell out of fashion in the years following the death of the Xuande emperor, it had been in the mainstream of Chinese porcelain manufacture since the beginning of the 15th century. It has had an immense effect on the manufacture of porcelain elsewhere, and in the 17th century was effectively the only porcelain known in Europe. In this history, the author traces the progress of "blue and white" from its uncertain beginnings to the end of the Qing Dynasty. It should be a suitable source of reference when evaluating the authenticity, provenance and dating of Chinese "blue and white".

I purchased this book to get a better understanding of Chinese Blue and White Porcelain. It totally fulfilled this requirement. This book is very helpful for a beginning or mature collector. It is simple to understand and easy to read. There are many pictures and very detailed pictures of markings on the bottom of your objects. Also, if you find a topic not addressed in the book you can email Duncan and he will assist you in resolving your issue. The bottom line is that this book is "Brilliant".

I bought this book several years ago as a gift for my sister-in-law, who collects blue and white china. She absolutely loved it! The book's focus is on the antique, highly collectible pieces, and even though my sister-in-law mostly collects reproductions, she enjoyed reading about the history of this genre of china and also loved the photos of the antique pieces.I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Chinese blue and white china and is interested in learning more about its origins.
