Book Description

Buddhist Tradition December 2000
The entire Hindu "Chinnamastatantra" section from the Sakta Pramoda, the Buddhist "Chinnamunda Vajravarahisadhna" and the "Trikayavajrayoginistuti" are translated for the first time into English. Since Chinnamasta is a rare goddess, her texts were not popularized or made "fashionable" according to the dictates of a particular group at a particular time. The earliest extant texts date from the ninth and tenth centuries-a time when Hindu and Buddhist Tantras were developing under common influences in the same places in India. Having such texts about Chinnamasta. Chinnamunda from these centuries, one can begin to understand the mutuality of a general Tantric tradition and the exclusivity of a particular Hindu or Buddhist Tantric tradition.

This review is from: Chinnamasta: The Aweful Buddhist and Hindu Tantric (Buddhist Tradition) (Paperback)
This slim volume contains a wealth of information on the evocative goddess, Chinnamasta. It's difficult to find information on Chinnamasta, even in India - but Benard presents here not only background information on the goddess, but also the complete puja (worship), with mantras, meanings and also - most interestingly - the actual practices that go along with puja.

This is a must-read for anyone interested in the field of Shakta Tantra. It is well-written, and although Benard could better support some of her assertions, overall it is an important contribution to the field.
