He would love it, and it would be his best friend. But Chip's parents do not want a dog. His mother is a "cat person," and his father has the usual concerns. Poor Chip. He resigns himself to his sad fate, until one night he dreams up the perfect solution to his dog problem.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. Wegman has made a name for himself photographing Weimaraners as dog-faced humans. In his latest picture book, Chip, a young Weimaraner dressed as a boy, is obsessed with dogs. He wants a dog to play with more than anything. In his imagination, he teaches his dream pet to sit, stay, fetch, and roll over (his pretend friend is a stuffed toy Weimaraner). Chip's parents do not want a dog. His mom (a dog wearing a platinum blond wig and sneakers) is a "cat person," and his dad argues that dogs are a big responsibility. In one hilariously staged breakfast scene, the three sit around a table, expressionless: "There is nothing more to discuss." One day, after a vivid dream, Chip realizes that he is actually a dog and therefore doesn't need one: "He took himself for a walk, taught himself new tricks, and gave himself a bone." This offbeat story turns the "child wants dog" story on its head and is sure to generate giggles from both kids and adults. Karin Snelson

5.0 out of 5 stars children love the absurd humor, May 14, 2003
This review is from: Chip Wants a Dog (Hardcover)
Children love the absurd humor in this picture book by William Wegman. The trademark Wegman dogs, weimaraners, are photographed here in a variety of settings. Chip, one of the weimaraners, is dressed like a human. Chip believes he IS a human, and he wants a dog. Chip gazes longingly out a window at a dog, wishing he could own one. A dog would make Chip happy, or so he thinks. Chip's mother and father do not want a dog in the house, though.

There are lots of humorous photographs here. The illustrations are playful, and the expressions on the dogs' faces will bring you belly laughs.

Eventually, Chip realizes that he IS a dog (the truth comes to him in a dream), and that helps him resolve the conflict.

I recommend this to all children, and adults with a playful sense of the absurd.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Chip Wants a Dog (Hardcover)
I loooovvvvve the fact that William Wegman dresses those dogs up!!! I think It's also funny that one of the sentences is: but his mother liked cats. She was a cat person. Isn't that funny! there are 3 jokes inside this book not like knock-knock though. there are at least 3 very, very funny parts!!! what's also funny is chip wants a dog the whole book, but he really is a dog!!!
