Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 ``Imagine you are someone small sleeping on a bed of leaves in a cool, dark room underground.'' Taking this opening suggestion literally, just as young listeners might do, Cherry has turned Ryder's simple text about a chipmunk's late summer activities into an extraordinarily attractive picture book. The child that Ryder is addressing is shown on each double-page spread experiencing the same activities as the chipmunk. The miniature child and the animal itself climb into the sunlight, gather berries and nuts, hide from a hawk, prepare their snug burrows, and finally curl up for the long winter sleep. There is no interaction between child and chipmunk, subtly maintaining the distinction between what is real and what is imagined. The fine watercolor and ink illustrations, in cutaways below ground and at chipmunk eye-level above, are full of intriguing, accurate detail in a fresh perspective. Science, art, and imagination are rarely so well served. Janet D. French, Centennial School District Libs . , Warminster, Pa.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to read to children, or to yourself., October 7, 1999
By
Ellen C. Shaffer (State of Washington, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Chipmunk Song (Lodestar Unicorn Paperback) (Paperback)
Chipmunk Song provides children with a chipmunk's eye view of the world outdoors, with colorful, creative, and detailed illustrations that can stand on their own. But with the subtly evocative text to go with them, the book is as fascinating to read to children, as it is to the children themselves. You may find yourself reading this one when the children aren't around, just for enjoyment. The pictures of the woods and the underground environment are realistic enough to teach, and creative enough to bring a child into that environment. The text, almost lyrical, takes reader and listener on a woodland adventure they will not soon forget.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chipmunk Song, June 28, 2011

This review is from: Chipmunk Song (Hardcover)
A wonderful look at the life of a chipmunk from the chipmunk's point of view. A child follows a chipmunk through its day, in and out of its den. Very easy for small children to understand, with absolutely delightful illustrations. When I read this to my threes, it holds them spellbound from beginning to end, and is asked for frequently.
