5.0 out of 5 stars Great American Made Boots., December 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought these boots for various reasons. First off, they are made in America! I know! It's hard to believe, but it's true! Secondly, Chippewa has been an American made product since the early 1900's. They pioneered the process of lining boots with insulation to help keep feet warm and dry in cold and wet climates. Finally, Chippewa is known for comfort. As of this writing, I've been wearing my pair of Chippewa's for a week. Already they have that perfectly broken in feel. Even on the first day they felt perfectly comfortable. I work in an outdoor lumber yard in Ohio and I need boots that keep my feet warm, dry and comfortable throughout the winter. These boots are perfect for that job. I used to swear by Rocky Boots when they were made just an hour away from my hometown. Now, I will swear by Chippewa Boots because they can still deliver what they promise, unlike Rocky. Plus, Chippewa's are made in America. So, if you want the best, buy Chippewa. Buy American!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent boot, February 20, 2011
I have worked in the construction field for 26 years and I have never found a boot that can hold up like Chippewa and I have tried many different brands. They are worth every penny.I usually get 2-3 years out of each pair, and once broken in they are like wearing slippers!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best boots I've ever worn, November 2, 2011

This is the most expensive pair of boots I've ever purchased. But they're worth every penny.

These boots are 100% waterproof, and perfectly insulated for cool to very cold days. I just spent three days trudging through six inches of slush from a freak October snowstorm in New England, and these boots kept my feet warm and dry for over 6 hours in those conditions.

I purchased these boots at a local outdoors store, so I was able to try them on and compare them to Chippewa's Super Logger boots. I found these to be much more comfortable than the Super Loggers. The Super Loggers have a very high heel, which was not at all comfortable for me. These boots have a bigger heel than other boots I've worn, but it was fairly easy to get used to.

A word of warning, they do take some breaking in - mostly just the top of the boot rubbing against your shin and calf. I was sore the first time I wore them on my 3/4 mile walk from the train station to work. After the first two miles, though, they were sufficiently broken in to no longer hurt, even when I wore them for the aforementioned 6 hours of hard work. I never had a problem with any other part of the boot rubbing the wrong way.

The fit is very accurate to the size, I almost always wear a 10.5 wide shoe (sneakers, boots, dress shoes), and the 10.5 E version of these boots fit perfectly (the Super Loggers seemed to run slightly more narrow and I would have needed the EEE for those).

The insulation is perfect for cool days, though at 60ºF they were a little warm. Accordingly, I don't think I'd want to wear these inside for too long, or my feet would get too warm.

The tread is simply amazing on these boots. It is very grippy, even on flat wet surfaces, and I haven't had any squeaking problems, even when the treads are wet.

I'm glad they are made in America... it's good to know the guy who worked on my boots went home to his house in Wisconsin, and turned on the same news I watch, watches the same games I watch, and votes in the same elections I vote in. Why send your money overseas, when you can get these great boots made right here in the USA?

4.0 out of 5 stars Very very warm and heavy, June 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have tried Redwings, Timberlands, and these boots. These are far and away the best boots. They are very warm, and have never had water leak through them. The only down fall is they are very heavy on your feet. Only get these boots if you plan to put a hurting on your feet outside for extended period of time. If your looking for a nice looking boot to wear whenever look elsewhere. These are for kick butt work only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Work Boots, January 1, 2012

You get what you pay for with these boots. I do irrigation work summers, and deliver heating oil winters. I wear my boots a minimum of 40 hours every week of the year. In irrigation, they constantly go through wet/dry cycles daily, and in winter constant exposure to road salts, dripping oil, and winter weather. In other words, they do not have an easy life. That said, they last about 2 years for me. The soles never wear out, but eventually the leather cracks at the main crease across the toe. I never treat them with anything, and doing so may well help and extend their life. I've never had a seam or even a thread go in 10 years of wearing these boots. Extraordinarily well made. The laces are really the only thing that goes. Good idea to pick up spare laces when ordering. (I think my dog likes to chew on mine). A minor gripe is that after about a year the interior lining comes loose from the sole. When this happens you can't put toe to heel to pull of the boots, or you also pull half the lining out and half to stuff it back in. Instead you need to sit down and pull them off manually with a finger or two inside the heal to hold the lining in place. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning.

Breaking in: Be careful. Don't lace these up on the first day and head out for 8 hours of work. If you do, you won't be able to wear them again for a couple of days your feet will be so sore! I often work half-days on Saturdays and this is when I break them in. I put them on without lacing at all tight. The new boots are so stiff they will not slip around. After about 3 half-days, I can go 8 hours, and I gradually begin to lace them tight. Once broken in, these boots are the most comfortable thing your feet will ever know. As 1 reviewer stated, they are indeed like slippers. I buy my Chippewas a half-size larger than normal, for what it's worth.

Not exactly water proof though. In rainy wet, muddy weather they are. But in standing water not so much. Winters when I stand at my truck there is often standing water/slush along the curb from the road salts melting the snow, and in these instances, the boots will take in water. Not a lot, but even a little cold water negates the insulation and woolen socks and the result is frozen feet. Without water intake, these boots have always been warm enough to handle anything RI winter dishes up. And despite the insulation, they are also never too warm during summers. This winter season I am going to try out their Arctic 50s and see how they do with the water. I am also going to try some Sno-Seal with them, which seems to be highly reviewed here.

A lot of guys I work with say they'd never pay this money for a pair of boots. Then they go through a couple pair every season and always have issues with their feet. Well, do the math and then think of all the comfort these boots provide. Even when it is time to throw a pair out, they are still as wonderfully comfortable as ever. And if you work in dry conditions mostly, no telling how long a pair could last for you. You may not like the price, but if you wear your boots every day, I swear if you give a pair of these a go, you'll not regret the investment.

4.0 out of 5 stars my boots squeak, June 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
These are my second pair of cheppewa boots. Last pair lasted over a year. I wear my boots 7 days a week. They are the most comfortable boots I have had to date and I will continue wearing chippewa as long I need to wear boots. My only complaint is both pairs squeak. They honestly do.
