I was looking around for a new pair of boots for a while. I needed something that could handle the winter but still look slick. The $2-300 price tag of Wolverines and RWs put me off, but I found a great brand in Chippewa. They fit great right out of the box and the tan color is surprisingly good looking. I look forward to breaking these bad boys in the next few weeks.

Remember to order a half size smaller than you usually get. I wear an 11 in my Clark DBs so I ordered a 10.5 for these.

After searching for Red Wing boots, I came across Chippewa's. I wasn't sure what kind of quality they would be, but they were $100 compared to the $300 Red Wings, so I decided to give them a shot.

Instant impressions: These are really well made. This color combo is the best Chippewa offers and they look incredible with denim or other casual pants. What surprised me the most though, was how comfortable they were. I read other reviews that said they needed to be broke in, which would take about 2 weeks and then they were comfortable. Not true. After having them on for about 10 hours, they broke in pretty well. After a few days, they were super comfortable. I'm talking like, they are the most comfortable shoe I own, comfortable! I'm also not a super tall guy, so I enjoyed getting the extra 3in lift from them. To top things off, my wife says I look tall and skinny in them, which I am perfectly fine with!

Overall: I gave these a 5 because they are perfect for what I was wanting. They look good when I wear them to the office, the color goes with jeans and other pants well and the price was right. My buddy who has the $320.00 Jcrew Red Wings won't stop looking that them. Enough said.

Outstanding Boots! They arrived as expected - very stiff leather and scuffed up a bit. No issues. I tried them on, and they felt like all Chippewa boots seem to do at first; stiff and painful to wear. After inspecting the quality of the leather and stitching (good and strong), I took the laces off of them and coated the boots down with Obenauf's (available on Amazon Obenauf's Leather Oil 16oz. - Restores Dry Leather - Made in the US). I then let them sit for six or so hours, and then tried them on again. This time the leather felt like the soft oiled leather on a good baseball glove. I went on a short walk, and by the time I got back they fit my feet like I had been wearing them for years. Simply outstanding! The original color was almost straw. After the leather treatment they look like a cup of warm coffee with a dash of cream, and all the manufacturing/shipping scuffs are gone.

I bought these to replace a pair of tired, but well-loved HS Trask Sportsman boots that were a staple of my wardrobe for the last 4 or 5 years. I believe HS Trask's parent company went bankrupt, so I started my search for a replacement.

The replacement boots had to meet the following qualifications:

    1. Quality Construction. The boots appear and feel very well made. Seams are double or triple stitched. The leather feels thick, but should become supple and soft over time. The sole is welted to the upper, rather than just being cemented. The laces are waxed to prevent them from coming untied, and the hardwear looks and feels substantial.

    2. Attractive & Functional. These have a classic appearance that allow them to be worn with jeans or trousers. I work in an office and frequent construction sites, and these boots are well-suited to both environments. For construction sites that require steel toes, I keep a pair of inexpensive CAT boots in my trunk. If I needed to wear steel toes more often, I'd get the steel-toed version of this boot. The Vibram outsoles on this version aren't deeply lugged, so they probably wouldn't perform well offroad or on unstable/rocky surfaces. They should be ideal in urban environments, where traction isn't a concern. The color isn't a traditional tan; it's closer to a latte color.

    3. Comfort & Fit. First of all, these boots run large. I wear a 9D in dress shoes, a 9.5 or 10 in running shoes, and a 9.5 D or 2E in boots. I typically wear thick wool socks with boots, and my feet are slightly wider than medium width. I ordered a 9 2E, and I have spare room in the toe box with two pairs of socks. I would probably fit into an 8.5 2E with one pair of socks.

    First Impressions
I did a LOT of research before this purchase as I've never purchased shoes online before.
They are not carried locally but everything I tried on locally didn't fit right.
I purchased these based on the reviews and price.
Boots arrived Friday, wore them around the house and yard 3/4 of the day Saturday.
I wear a size 9 1/2 in most shoes, purchased a size 9 of these boots based on previous reviews, glad I did.
They are lighter then I expected and I love that as I didn't want a heavy boot.
Fit right out of the box, comfy, good arch support.
Leather is stiff, expect it to wear in and form over the next few weeks.
These are not work boots, I wear dress shoes for work.
My plans for these are weekends and days off, for working around the house and yard or walking around shopping, etc.
They look good with jeans, I haven't treated them yet [I have a can of Obenauf's LP ready and waiting]
Very happy with my purchase, will be writing another review in a few months.

May9: Picked up some mid weight all cotton socks at Academy [Wolverine brand] and they work well with the boot. Wore them around the house the first weekend, achieved 90% of break in. Wore them around the yard and when out and about since, really like them. Just treated them today with the Obenauf's and they darkened up just like all the other reviews said it would.
