Robert Benchley (1889-1945) was a hugely popular humorist, drama critic, and occasionally a film actor. All of the anthologies of Benchley's essays will give delight to readers having an interest in the social fabric of pre-1950 America. This collection of his sketches is funny and insightful of the times, including political and social issues of the era. It is worth reading, as are any of his earlier collection of humorous sketches, including 'Of All Things' (1921), 'From Bed to Worse' (1934), 'My Ten Years in a Quandary' (1936), 'Inside Benchley' (1941), and 'Benchley Beside Himself' (1943). Benchley was a loveable grouch, a satirist, and in insightful social critic...and a fine comedic actor. He was an American original whose work can delight with light humor and satire. That said, this volume will appeal most to those with some interest and knowledge of the culture and events of America in the first half of the 20th Century.
