Book Description

On the evening news, Vancouver lawyer Matt Wayne catches the story of a murdered Japanese tourist and instantly makes a decision: he will go to Todos Santos, high in the mountains of Guatemala, to hunt down the woman he hates.

In Todos Santos, Pira and her mother, Alma, keep quiet about their past, much as their Mayan neighbors, still in shock after four decades of La Violencia, now maintain El Silencio over an unspeakable history. But two aspiring journalists, stumbling onto the fate of the tourist, tell the sensational story for their own purposes, proving once again that lies uncover truth better than truth uncovers lies.

Only the shaman Natalya, dreaming of the vengeful, mythic Anton Kristo, foresees the wave of new violence about to engulf Todos Santos with the coming of Matt Wayne. Pira is plunged into a fight for her life and Alma faces a mother’s sacrifice -- to give up everything for a child.

About the Author

Kaimana Wolff, better known as Wolffy, is a writer of poetry, drama and fiction and leader of a small wolf-pack. She loves to travel, cook, and kick cancer's ass all the way to the Underworld.

Kaimana's pack consists of Lord Tyee, a rescued wolf-shepherd, and her genderqueer daughter-son, Kat van Loon (also known as Morag Spinner), as well as various humans acquired through a careful vetting process directed by the fur-person. There have been many wolf-dogs in the pack -- seven, at last count, though not all at the same time -- and each has made a contribution to the life and culture of the pack.

Throughout her insatiable loping around the planet, Wolffy has visited some exotic dens. Her Dutch family moved to Canada when she was three. Since then she's jumped at every opportunity to see a new corner of the world. She and Kat have gone to South-East Asia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, various US states, Mexico, and Dominican Republic. Wolffy has also been to Nicaragua and Ecuador. She plans on kidnapping Kat to those places (Kat has no complaints about this).

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual Format; No Conclusion (Part 1 of ?); Long Saga December 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a long saga following a mother and daughter as they escape a life of domestic abuse in Canada. The story is told in 'chapters' from the perspectives of the characters involved, including a dog. We piece together the story from the narratives of the mother, daughter, various other family members, including the abuser, and the people in Guatamala who become part of the story. Although unusual, you really get to know each character vividly.

Be warned that this book does not come to a conclusion but is the first of three (the title tells us it is a trilogy) so the ending is simply 'to be continued.'

I loved the characters development and mystery. I wished the story had concluded but maybe sometime in the future....

The only problem I had with this book was... I didn't have the rest of the trilogy to see how it ended!

5.0 out of 5 stars La Chiripa May 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is magnificent! It's written in "first person serial" style which can be difficult to pull off, but Kaimana Wolf doesn't miss a beat. We never know what's coming next - she has no trouble flipping back & forth in time and we have no trouble going along for the ride.

We get to see inside each character's head, even the baddie, so this read is up close & personal. We even receive a lesson in the geography & history of an exotic place, as well as an education in America's not-always-so-noble role in such a place (Guatemala). Part of my mind was going "oh yes, I remember hearing about that civil war ... horrible place ..." - and then Kaimana socks it to us so we're forced to reconsider our world view.

But best of all is her writing style - and I do mean "style". This woman is a poet and her language and imagery are gorgeous. Sometimes I want to hold up the action and just appreciate her lush verbal mastery ... "She begins to cry, softly, the way a trickle of rain with nowhere to go edges its way around stones, high in the mountains. The trickle takes on the hiccups of a rivulet, runs down her face and chest to pool on the floor of the car, growing into a brook, a creek,a torrent that forces them to wind down the windows of the car to let it waterfall out onto the concrete. Carlos takes her into his strong old arms and lets her cry, on and on, joining his tears to hers as they pool into a pond, a lake. There they sit, a man and a woman, old misfits, weeping out a tributary to the heartbreak of the world which everywhere yearns for the sea, the ocean of tears sprung from the eyes of Earth."

Bravo! Can't wait for the next in "The Falling Sky Trilogy"! you really left me hanging! ouch!
