When I was a little girl, my mom used to sing along to a song called "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" whenever it came on the radio. For years I wondered if I'd only imagined it, but rediscovered it quite by accident on You Tube when I was looking at New Seekers videos. Having found another video for "Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum," I decided to buy this 3-disc set. Guess what? I'm not sorry! Now, true, "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" is ABBA-esque at first, but it sounds more like the Sweet's "Little Willy" upon closer inspection. Also, "Bottom's Up" definitely has a New Seekers vibe, but I think it's a bit more fun. Bottom line: this quartet was a really talented and grossly overlooked unit! Mixing R&B, bubblegum, and very good, straight ahead light rock, this group boasted fabulous musicianship, great harmonies, and an exceptional female lead voice in Sally Carr. This is so worth the trouble to purchase, because they do a way better version of "Yellow River" than Christy, a great Bugaloos resemblant track called "We Are the Founders of All That's Around Us," and fabulous covers of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough (in both Italian and English)" and "Superstar" from the Andrew Lloyd Weber classic. "Sacramento" is great catchy pop while "Love Sweet Love" is a slice of country rock heaven. "Soley Soley" is pure latin inspired ambrosia while "Louise (My Little Ship)" is just plain adorable and imaginative. I think Drive On was probably their weakest album, but it also has some great tracks, particularly "Honey No" which sounds very remeniscent to McCartney and Wings' "Hi, Hi, Hi." Actually, I like most everything on here except "Queen Bee" and the eerily BeeGee-like "Universal Man." This band had great musical sensibilities and most of their material was really good, diversified pop. I'm not sure which of the guys was the male lead in the lineup, but Sally Carr's voice was pure, flawless, soulful, and completely enchanting. If you like a good pop group similar to ABBA, the New Seekers, and the Bugaloos but require more edge, Middle of the Road's music is for you.
