About the Author

Konami Kanata was born on July 3, 1958, in Nagano, Japan. A veteran manga artist Konami made her professional debut in 1982 with the serialized comic Petit Cat Jam-Jam for Kodansha's semenal shoujo manga magazine NakaYoshi.  Her ability to observe and render feline behavior has earned her respect from the Japanese manga community as a whole. While most of her properties were published for a younger female demographic, her most recent series Chi's Sweet Home is currently being published by Kodansha's Morning magazine, Japan's leading comic magazine for adult readers. This is the ninth installment in the Chi’s Sweet Home series. I actually liked this volume a bit better than the last. There is a bit more of a story here and I enjoyed watching Chi and Cocchi explore their friendship.

After the Yamadas decide Chi should be an inside cat Chi is very upset because she promised Cocchi she would come and play. This is followed by a rather humorous part where Mr. Yamada tries to compromise with Chi and tries to walk her on a leash. When Chi escapes the dreaded leash, she tries to make it as an outside cat. She is starting to kind of understand what Cocchi goes through on a day to day basis. Meanwhile Cocchi is trying to understand what a “home” is. Cocchi gets a nice surprise at the end of the story.

I especially enjoyed the leash scenes in this book, I have tried to walk a cat on a leash...I think most cat owners give that a try at some point. What happens is so hilarious and is portrayed in this book just perfectly.

Watching Chi and Cocchi play and try to understand each other’s worlds was cute and funny.

This continues to be one of my 7 year old son’s favorite series to read. The illustrations are cute and done in soft pastels, the illustration is easy to follow. I love how all of the cats have their different “voices they use”.

Overall another well done installment of Chi’s Sweet Home. This is a great manga series that I would definitely recommend to cat lovers. It’s great for all ages and a super fun read.

This volume was cute as usual but also one of the most emotional volumes to date. Not sad, just a lot of empathy for the characters, especially the animal ones. Starts off with Chi mastering her cone and then getting it removed. But then the Yamadas decide she should be a house cat for her own safety. Chi is confused, why can't she leave? This is sad and frustrating for Chi and yet we also feel for the owners. (My personal opinion is that cats should be house cats). But Cocchi has been waiting for her since the last visit. Cocchi is expectantly waiting for his new found friend and the stray becomes lonely, hostile and lonely as time goes by and Chi doesn't return. But after Mr. Yamada's brilliant idea to take Chi for a walk on leash blows up in his face Chi is free and rushes off to find her friend. Can Chi ever go home again? Will they now lock her up and not let her out? She decides to spend the night with Cocchi and try the "free-living life" and emotions are tugged throughout until the heartwarming, and a bit surprising, ending. A nice change of pace from the other volumes, gives a bit of new life to the series.

The book reads left to right (English Version) instead of right to left (Japanese Version) like you'd exspect with a Manga, but still worth it! All color pages and the stories are real short: good for a quick read.
