Book Description

February 16, 2010
What does it mean to be a man? When a culture fails to answer that properly, the results can be disastrous. For men it can lead to broken identity, overcrowded prisons, spousal abuse, gang violence, chemical addiction and aggressive, anti-social tendencies that wreck havoc all over the world. For women it can mean living in a suppressed environment where involvement is marginalized. Using medieval chivalry as a springboard, this book leads the reader into a thought-provoking quest for values long ignored. By incorporating freedom, personal authenticity, democracy and equality (including feminism), this new form of chivalry is entirely relevant for today's world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

What D. Joseph Jacques has written strikes me as the sort of thing that draws readers intoA" the weave, instead of keeping them on the edging of the fabric. Makes them participators, not spectators. (Bruce Harper, Director of La Confrerie du Pelerinage Sacre, Australia) Chivalry-Now hits at the heart of what it means, and always has meant, to be a man. It's a sure road map for men. It promises to improve men, those they love, and the whole of society. (Daniel Murphy, President/CEO Community Works, Medford, Oregon, USA)

4.0 out of 5 stars Updating the Code, February 24, 2010
This review is from: Chivalry-Now: The Code of Male Ethics (Paperback)
Here is an interesting take on an old idea: update the Medieval code of chivalry for the 21st century male. In "Chivalry-Now", the author presents a persuasive, and often personal and passionate, case for the necessity of a code of ethics/behavior for modern men. Reaching back into the past (via Arthurian tales) he re-presents this knightly code in the form of "Twelve Trusts". Each relates, not only to the stories themselves, but also to what might be an authentic path for today- especially for young men, who so desperately need a valid path, a code to live by. One wishes for more examples from the tales themselves, and some illustrations might also provide some "eye appeal", but overall this is a unique and highly original expose on a perennial question: what does it really mean to be a man? Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chivalry - Revived, May 5, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Chivalry-Now: The Code of Male Ethics (Paperback)
Chivalry is dead? Not on your life! Mr. Jacques has taken the Chivalric Code of Medieval Knights and brought it forth into the 21st century. This book is for men, women and children who would like to develope character, honesty, honor, loyalty, courtesy and a genuine concern for the world around us. Many feel that Knights & Chivalry are just a relic from a bygone age. Nothing could be further from the truth. We need "Knights In Shining Armor" more today, than at any other time in our history. Mr. Jacques has given us a concise plan on how to do this. Well done, well done indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chivalry "Now", February 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Chivalry-Now: The Code of Male Ethics (Paperback)
From his years as a Social Worker Mr. Jacques noticed an alarming trend, a lack of Ethics, specifically Male ethics. This lack of ethics, a lack of Chivalry, has left a void on what it means to be a man. Chivalry Now presents a way to fill this void. Chivalry is not about opening doors, walking on the curbside and standing when a woman enters a room. That is just common courtesy. Courtesy IS a part of Chivalry. However, True Chivalry has deeper roots that reach down into the depths of every man, woman and child. As stated in Chivalry Now its an innate part of our existence. We have only forgotten it. Chivalry Now offers a road map for returning to that forgotten place. The Twelve Trusts are sign posts for the Reader to use on his/her personal Quest. Using Medieval Chivalry as a model and drawing from the Arthur Legends to provide object lessons on positive male ethics, Mr. Jacques has succeeded in bringing forth a New Chivalry relevant to our Modern Times. Chivalry Now advocates free thinking as Knight-Errands following a new code of chivalry. Chivalry Now should not be read quickly and placed aside, It should be read slowly contemplating each chapter and Trust and how it relates to your own personal Quest.
