You know those books you read when you were a kid--"Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (text only) by V. Lee Burton," "The Little House," "Harry the Dirty Dog," "The Caboose Who Got Loose -," "Where the Wild Things Are," and so on? Remember why they transported you? It wasn't usually because they were fantastical like "Wild," it was because they were so vivid. The worlds they created were built with their sense of art just as much as their sense of words.

I feel like a great deal of the new books I try to pick up and read to my kids today have lost that. They spend so much time focused on the "message" and the "lesson" that they forget the world. Because once you are in the world, you learn its lessons easily, almost without realizing it:

"Mike" & "House" both teach that we always have purpose and use no matter our stage of life.
"Harry" and "Wild" teach about the value of home and family and love.
and "Caboose" reminds us that once we become happy with our lives, we'll find what we're looking for.

Bringing back that tradition of high art and soft lessons is Micah Player, with his debut Children's book, "Chloe, Instead." If you look up Mr.

I think my wife cries every time she reads this to our 4 and 2 yr old girls, that alone tells you it's good.

I picked the book up because we, too, have a little Chloe that entered a big sister's world. The pictures are so cute and vivid and the simple story so endearing that we couldn't not have the book at home. It is also universal and works for any family experiencing change - not just with the arrival of a Chloe.

The girl in the story loves to play piano. She used to be an only child until her younger sister showed up. She was hoping for a sister just like her, but she got Chloe instead. Chloe is a high energy girl who gets into anything and everything. Her sister prefers quiet activities such as the piano, drawing and reading. Chloe pushes her sister's buttons a bit too much causing her to yell at Chloe. But then she feels bad and calls Chloe back. She plays the piano so that Chloe can dance. The girl is glad she got Chloe instead.

The illustrations are very colorful. They are made digitally and finished with ink and watercolor. They are larger than life pictures that easily show emotions and action.

This is a beautiful story about sisters who are far apart in age, but find ways to have things in common. The girl loves her sister and it shows. I absolutely love it and adore the ending. This book is advertised for ages 3-6 which is perfect as the story is simply told.

My daughters (12 and 4) love this book! My older daughter waited a long, long time to get a little sister and, of course, they have very different tastes and personalities. This is now a favorite bedtime book of ours(it's also nice that it's on the short side). My girls especially like the end when the little sister climbs in the big sister's bed. I highly recommend it, especially if you have daughters.

Chloe, sister couldn't wait for her to be born. Her older sister wanted someone that would like the same things she did but Chloe has her own likes and dislikes.

This is a great book for an older sibling preparing for a new baby. It's funny, it's cute, and it's got some truth. I would love to see this as a series. The drawing is excellent and fits the story.

This is a fabulous book with cute illustrations and rich colors that tells the story of a new little sister entering the family dynamic. Perfect for families expecting their 2nd child! This book teaches all of us that even though we sometimes get things that aren't quite what we expected, it's sometimes even better than what we thought we wanted.

This is the best book EVER! My favorite part is at the end, when the sisters snuggled up to each other.
