"Formed summer 1985, Austin's Two Nice Girls achieved national renown with their well-measured mix of folk-forged vocal harmonies, eclectic musical tangents, good humor, and avowedly lesbian sentiments. TNG began as a trio, with Gretchen Phillips (Meat Joy/Girls in the Nose), Kathy Korniloff, and Laurie Freelove sharing lead vocal duties and switching instruments. Their banter-heavy live sets interspersed lilt with laughter, jumping from transcendent torch balladry to Deep Purple covers. The trio won Austin's "Sweet Jane" contest in 1985 with a gorgeous rendition of the Velvet Underground classic that interpolated Joan Armatrading's "Love and Affection." The song was a centerpiece of TNG's self-titled 1989 debut, along with Phillips' satirical honky-tonk anthem, "I Spent My Last $10 (On Birth Control and Beer)." The latter ultimately appeared on the 1997 Rhino Records compilation, Lesbian Favorites: Women Like Us. Freelove left the band after the first album and was replaced by vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Meg Hentges and drummer Pam Barger. In 1990, TNG released Like a Version, an all-covers EP featuring Bad Company's "Feel Like Makin' Love" and the Speed Racer theme. The band headlined San Francisco's Great American Music Hall and won a media award from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) in 1991. Shortly after releasing TNG's second album, Chloe Liked Olivia, Rough Trade went bankrupt. Citing musical differences, Two Nice Girls disbanded the following year. Phillips' Seasick Sailor label reissued the group's debut in 2007." - Greg Beets
