4.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Soundtrack, but Still Worthy of Owning, June 28, 2011
This review is from: Chloe (Audio CD)
I've been a fan of Mychael Danna since he first burst onto the scene on the Hearts of Space radio program. Since then, he's kind of been hit-or-miss for me. This would be one of the hits. It's atmospheric, it can sit in the background without being obtrusive, and when you pause to listen, it's never boring. It hearkens back to classic thrillers - I'm thinking Vertigo - in its overall theme, which makes sense, given that both films center around the psychological descent of both protagonists.
Chloe doesn't make the top 50 soundtracks of all time, but I'd definitely put it in with the top 200. The movie itself, on the other hand, not so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sympathy for the Erotic Thriller, June 6, 2011

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Chloe (Audio CD)
I find this film score to be very atmospheric, haunting, sad and raw with a sense of pain and longing. The recurring music pattern that can only be Chole's Theme makes you want to focus on the thought of her back story.
How did she become this way? What made her seek out the business of sex and make it her trade? You begin to wonder all of this, and feel sorry for her. All of the tracks performed by Mr.Danna, flutters effortlessly and gives you a hint of Chole's wavering sense of reality.

Of course, from seeing this movie, you know this is a person who is very unstable mentally and very needy in terms of - I want someone to love me.
And yes, the music does spark up that old adage of
looking for love in all the wrong places.

The character's emotion of desperation and loneliness is also expertly convey on this cd.

Storytelling in soundtracks is just as important as the film itself and this certainly does the job of doing just that.
I really enjoyed listening to all of the soundtrack. Nicely Done!

2.0 out of 5 stars In The End This Score Had A Good Theme, But Was Boring & Distant, April 7, 2010
By
Kaya R. Savas (North Hollywood, CA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Chloe (Audio CD)
Mychael Danna has just come from co- composing an amazing score with his brother for The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus. When I first saw the trailer for Chloe nothing about it appealed to me, so I can't say I was expecting anything great from the score.

The first track sets up our main theme, and it isn't bad. However it doesn't really jump up and connect with you. Then again, this is a very quiet score. The problem is that this quiet score doesn't make any real attempt to connect with you emotionally so it's just sort of there. The tracks really blend together so there isn't anything that really stands out except for when the main theme finds its way back into the score now and then.

To be honest I found the entire experience quite distant and boring. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of quiet and atmospheric scores out there that manage to be incredibly emotionally engaging. The Hurt Locker is a pretty recent example of that. It's just that when a score itself can't take me on an emotional journey and tell me a story I find it really hard to enjoy the experience.

So, for me I'm gonna have to say pass on Chloe and keep on listening to Doctor Parnassus.
