4.0 out of 5 stars "Melt my heart. The thorns in my heart start to come undone..", December 11, 2008
By Pamela Scarangello (Middletown, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
If I can recommend to someone what new music to get his or her loved ones for the holiday season, it would of course be anything by the talented artists of Japan, particularly the ones emerging from the fashionably unique, loud, and semi-symphonic visual kei scene (a movement that produced eye-catching mascara-colored groups like Versailles, Blood, Phantasmagoria, Gackt, Moi dix Mois, and the internationally successful Dir en Grey). Kaya, the former lead singer of the electro-darkwave group Schwarz Stein, is no exception. This talented diva has made a name for himself not only by wearing pearls and satin gowns onstage, but also by releasing his "Glitter" LP and "Chocolat," his tantalizing debut single.
I chose to give this EP 4 stars simply for the sake of putting up one star for each track. I can best describe "Chocolat" as a bittersweet, gender-bending confection; a 3-minute long petit four of elegant pop EBM. The "Sweet" version of this song is played with slower, gentler acoustics for porcelain dolls in pink lace dresses. "Kayaless Chocolat" is pretty much a vocal-free remix one can play in the background of any gyrating rave club. But perhaps the best original song to look forward to on this CD is "Pourriture Noble," a dark and masochistic trance tune featuring leather slave whips, weeping violin strings, and silken strangulation. The translated lyrics, by the way, can be found on Kaya's official website. Also, as a devoted fan, I recently heard that on Christmas day he will unleash a brand new limited edition of a sad ballad titled "Last Snow."
