Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- Second grader Adam receives an ant colony for his birthday--without the ants. As he waits impatiently for them to arrive, he bones up on ant facts at the library, his mother worrying all the while about the insects getting loose in the house. When they finally arrive, older brother Max informs a disbelieving Adam that people eat chocolate-covered ants. If Max can prove that he is right, he'll win a bet with his brother. Disaster ensues; Mom calls off the bet, but Adam gets the last laugh. In Max' first-person narration, the deliberately paced story is precipitated by the arrival of the ant colony, and the plot is stretched from there. Ant jokes, riddles, and puns abound; the eating of chocolate-covered ants is gross and funny, although overused. This undemanding, quick read is mildly amusing fare for fans of Rockwell's How to Eat Fried Worms (Watts, 1973) and Robert Smith's Chocolate Fever (Dell, 1978). --Megan McDonald, Minneapolis Public Library

More About the Author

Bestselling author Stephen Manes has written more than thirty books and hundreds of articles in a long career of making arcane worlds accessible to the uninitiated. Four years in the making, his new book, "Where Snowflakes Dance and Swear: Inside the Land of Ballet," was born of his desire to discover how ballet really happens. Now the book has arrived--with an unprecedented amount of inside information about the world he calls the Land of Ballet, from intense rehearsals and lighting sessions to closed-door casting conferences and business meetings.

The book has already earned acclaim from around the globe. In the United States, BalletScoop and ExploreDance called it a "must-read," and Ballet-Dance Magazine deemed it "not to be missed." In Great Britain, a former dancer writing for Balletco found it "engrossing" and "unparalleled." In Australia, Dancelines said "'Snowflakes' reveals all. . . . I can't imagine any other company allowing a writer the same access . . . " James Fayette, a former Principal Dancer with the New York City Ballet, calls the book "a truly in-depth exploration that should be recommended to anyone who craves insight into the very private world of professional ballet and the dancer subculture."

Manes co-wrote the bestselling and much-acclaimed biography "Gates: How Microsoft's Mogul Reinvented an Industry--and Made Himself the Richest Man in America." He wrote long-running columns on personal technology for The New York Times, Forbes, PC World, PC Magazine, and many other publications. He was a creator and co-host of the weekly public television series "Digital Duo."

Manes is also the author of dozens of books for children and young adults. His "Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days!" won kid-voted awards in five states and is a curriculum staple in American and French schools. The sequel, "Make Four Million Dollars by Next Thursday!", quickly became a Publishers Weekly bestseller. His books have been adapted for stage and television productions.

Manes has a degree in cinema from the University of Southern California. His writing credits for the screen include programs for ABC Television and KCET/Los Angeles, as well as the 'seventies classic movie "Mother, Jugs & Speed." A native of Pittsburgh, he lives in Seattle.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Chocolate-Covered Ants (Paperback)
I am 11 years old and I read a book called Chocolate Covered Ants. It is really funny.
The best part is when one of the boys explodes ants in the microwave. He goes to school and he asks his friends to try the chocolate covered ants. When they do that they got in trouble and they had to eat some more. I also thought it was funny when the ants get loose in the bed, and he comes screaming down the hallway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and cute! Great for kids!, March 13, 2000
This review is from: Chocolate-Covered Ants (Paperback)
Although I'm a young adult, I still enjoy kids's stories like I did when I was a kid. This book I read a few days ago. I just LOVED IT! It is funny and cute, and well written. I had an ant farm when I was 10. It was a birthday gift from my parents. It was a lot of fun! When we got the ants in the mail I didn't read the directions on how to get them in there so I just tried to dump them in but they got loose all over the kitchen! haha! Somehow I got them inside of the farm, though. I thought I could just pick them up with my hands and one bit me <ouch that hurt>. It was a lot of fun althugh I think I over fed them. We came back from a camping trip and they were all dead. Sad. Anyway this book brought back good memories and made me laugh out loud!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chocolate Covered Ants Review, January 11, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Chocolate-Covered Ants (Paperback)
Chocolate Covered Ants takes place in Max's home town in U.S.A. Most of the story takes place in Max's and Adam's home and the school. Max and Adam who are brothers make a bet that people really eat chocolate covered ants.

Chocolate Covered Ants is about Max and his brother Adam and how Adam gets ants and an ant colony. Max makes a bet with Adam that people eat chocolate covered ants. Max tricks Adam into eating chocolate covered ants and almost wins the bet.

I liked this book because it is funny. My favorite part was when Mr. Milken makes Max and Max's friend eat chocolate covered ants. Another funny part is where Adam names his ants. My second favorite part is where Max eats ants from the microwave. I really liked this book I hope you will too.
