Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- A good deal of information can be found in these short, attractive books. The history of each food, how and where it is grown or made, its varieties or forms, how it is processed, its nutritional value, and several recipes are included. People in many parts of the world are shown in the various stages of growing or producing these popular items. Words are highlighted in boldface type in each title and can be found in an appended glossary. The plentiful illustrations are a satisfying blend of full-color photographs, drawings, and occasional reproductions of historical ads or paintings. Chocolate is shorter and simpler than Ammon's The Kids' Book of Chocolate (Atheneum, 1987), but offers much of the same information. It has a double-page illustration of a series of chocolate-making machines that are simply drawn, clearly labeled, and an asset to the book. The recipes in each book are basic and clearly described; directions for making cheese and pasta appear in the appropriate books. Apples contains much of the same information found in Johnson's Apple Trees (Lerner, 1983). Nutrition is stressed in all of the titles; even chocolate, whose carbohydrates give instant energy, is recommended with reservations: " . . . can be fattening if you don't use up the energy by exercising." Good resources for reports, and appealing enough to invite curious browsers as well. --Carolyn Jenks, Oyster River Elementary School, Durham, NH
