3.0 out of 5 stars a bit of a let-down
The first 3 books in this series were pretty good, although Lee's verbal tic is very annoying and pointless (maybe it's meant to make her seem more human, being a Dutch blonde Amazonian goddess and all). The murder who-done-it-and-why was hard to follow (partially because it was so uninteresting) and I found Joe's proposal at the end a bit overdone. I like light and...

Lee McKinney has a full life, between being the accountant for her aunt's chocolate business and trying to decide if she wants to marry her boyfriend Joe. All of this becomes more complicated, however, when Aubrey Andrews Armstong, a supposed Hollywood producer, comes to town to investigate the possibility of making a movie based on a book written by Maia Michaelson, a local woman. Lee knows that Maia is not a very good writer, and is suspicious of Aubrey's motives. She becomes even more unhappy when if appears that Aubrey is attempting to romance Lee's Aunt Nettie. As if this isn't bad enough, Joe begins to pressure her about helping him make
choices in redecorating his apartment, so that she will be more eager to marry him and move in with him. Needless to say, many chocolate bonbons and quite a bit of action later, Lee manages to get some answers to these problems. I especially enjoy the setting of these books because it is close to my hometown and is an area with which I am very familiar. This is an enjoyable series and is one that I look forward to reading more of in the future.

Hollywood has arrived in Warner Pier in the form of Aubrey Andrews Armstrong. He plans to make a movie based on the book Maia Michaelson wrote on her family history.

But Lee McKinney suspects something isn't right from the start. Aubrey seems too smooth and too good to be true. She seems to be the only one to realize this, however. Even her Aunt Nettie has agreed to go out on a date with him. With no one willing to listen to her, Lee sets out to find out what she can about Aubrey by herself. But she's hardly started when she finds a dead body. What's the connection to the movie? Can Lee stay alive long enough to find out?

As with other books in the series, I loved this one and could hardly put it down. Lee and her friends are wonderful characters that continue to grow on you. While I had a couple of the sub-plots figured out early on, the main mystery surprised me from the get go. I couldn't figure out for sure what was going on until Lee solved the case, even when the final clue was given.

Warner Pier is a great place to visit and Lee is a great tour guide. My only disappointment is that I'm done and have to wait for the next book to come out to visit again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as tasty as the first two, March 23, 2006
This review is from: The Chocolate Puppy Puzzle (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 4) (Paperback)
I LOVED this book. It was better than the first two. Could hardly put it down. Carl gets more and more clever with each new story. Plus I love dogs, so Monte was a great addition to the story. I highly recommend this mystery series if you're looking for something to do on a rainy afternoon. If you're looking for books with a lot of depth and substance, this mystery series isn't for you. However, if you enjoy reading and chocolate, pick this up along with a big box of See's candies. I especially like all the chocolate trivia. I learned something about my favorite food group. Bon appetite!

I like light and fluffy, but this got downright cheesy. Still a decent read, and I will go on and read the next one, based on the first 3 in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chocolate and murder, October 9, 2005
This review is from: The Chocolate Puppy Puzzle (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 4) (Paperback)
Lee McKinney is the business manager of her aunt's chocolate business TenHuis Chocolade in Warner Pier, Michigan. Lee is a bit skeptical when flashy Aubrey Andrews Armstrong sweeps into town claiming he wants to produce a movie based on a local author's romance novel. And he wants to film it on location. Most of the locals don't think the book was that good, so this just fuels Lee's suspicions of him.

Then Aunt Nettie starts going out with Aubrey. Joe is trying to get Lee to help him redecorate his apartment in the hopes that they will soon marry. Life is getting very confusing.

Lee gets even more suspicious of Aubrey when she stumbles over a dead body. Can Lee unravel the mystery and find out more information about Aubrey without ending up dead?

This was the first book I've read by this author. It won't be the last. I really enjoyed the characters and the setting. I look forward to reading many more escapades with Lee. I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chocolate Shop Book #4, January 23, 2011
This review is from: The Chocolate Puppy Puzzle (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 4) (Paperback)
This is the 4th book of the Chocoholic Series. Lee moves from North Texas to Michigan to live with her Aunt Nettie and to work in her Chocolate Shop.

In this particular book, a movie producer, Aubrey Andrews Armstrong, comes to the small Michigan town to make a movie out of Maia Michaelson's romance novel. Lee suspicions why he would want to make a movie out of her book, because she felt the book wasn't good at all. Will this small Michigan town become a town in which a movie is shot? Someone turns up dead . . . Lee and the police force are working to find the killer. Lee goes on some dangerous adventures . . . This book is interesting.

This particular book is puppy-themed. Chocolate puppies are being molded in Aunt Nettie's Chocolate Shop. A chocolate-colored real puppy takes center stage of the book.

I find the chocolate chat interesting. It adds a lot to the book.

I get the feeling that Lee is homesick for her North Texas hometown, even though she is happy in Michigan with her wonderful aunt and loving guy friend. But I know about being homesick. I admire Lee in a lot of ways, and I have a lot in common with her.

This is a wonderful cozy mystery series. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.

I enjoyed this book, and am satisfied with the book and the ending. All the pieces fit together perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another yummy installment!, September 26, 2007

This review is from: The Chocolate Puppy Puzzle (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 4) (Paperback)

Ok, first thing is first: I love chocolate, I love puppies and I love puzzles! So, how pleasing of a name is Chocolate Puppy Puzzle for a book?! Love it!! To top it off, this story does, indeed, contain chocolate, a puppy and a great puzzle of a mystery.
Now, with that said, Chocolate Puppy Puzzle is the 4th in the "A Chocoholic Mystery" series. I've greatly enjoyed each and every book in this series, and this one is no exception. I think that I may even lean toward saying that this is my favorite so far in the series.
The cast of characters are wonderful and quirky. First being Lee McKinney, who is the main person in the series - she is fun, smart and not afraid to do her own detective work. Next is Aunt Nettie who is a wonderful and sassy sort of lady who owns the TenHuis Chocolade where both she and Lee work. The 3rd main player is Joe Woodyard, who has come to be Lee's love interest and who is ready to take their relationship to the next level (marriage) - to Lee's unease.
In this delightful edition, one of Warner Pier's residents, Maia Michaelson, has written a romance novel, based on true accounts that have taken place within the area. This brings around a flashy Hollywood producer, Aubrey Andrews Armstrong, whom no one has even heard of. He claims to be there to bring Maia's creation to life on the big screen. However, Lee suspects that Aubrey is not all that he says he is. Then when her Aunt Nettie seems to fall under his charm, Lee really kicks her "research" into full gear.
Not long after Aubrey shows up, he suddenly disappears, leaving behind his constant companion, Monte, a sweet and mischievous chocolate lab puppy.
With several of the townspeople linked to Aubrey is some way or another, no one is sure who is the cause of Aubrey's disappearance. Then there is an attempt made on Lee's life and the mystery heats up. Will the killer be found in time and will Aubrey be found dead or alive?
With many fun and interesting chocolate trivia strewn throughout and with the author's quirky character names, this is a story sure to please. Grab a cup of rich delicious hot chocolate, sit back in a comfy chair and be prepared to visit Warner Pier, Michigan and all the lively and adventurous antics that take place.

4.0 out of 5 stars not one of the best in the series, August 15, 2007
This review is from: The Chocolate Puppy Puzzle (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 4) (Paperback)
This is the fourth title in the Chocoholic Mysteries series.

It was a bit of a stretch to include a dog in the story. The dog didn't have a serious role to play other than to make sense of the title. However, once you get past trying to figure out what is so puzzling about the puppy, you will find that this book is a nice easy read. A book you can curl up and relax with at the end of the day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Series, January 7, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Chocolate Puppy Puzzle (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 4) (Paperback)
As with all the other books in this series, this installment was cute, and a light, easy read.

However, Lee's "tongue-tangling" gets stupider and more annoying with each book. The "tangles" make no sense at all and aren't even remotely amusing -- which means they just grate on your nerves as your eyes skim the words and your brain realizes it has no idea what on earth you just read. I really wish the author would kill this idiotic gimmick, which would allow me to rate these books with at least one more star than I normally do.
