4.0 out of 5 stars Rise Stevens is wonderful..., July 16, 2000
This review is from: Chocolate Soldier [VHS] (VHS Tape)

But she's no Lynn Fontanne. This movie is a mixture of Strauss's The Chocolate Soldier and Molnar's The Guardsman (film version made by the Lunts). The premise of The Guardsman is that you're supposed to arrive at your OWN conclusion as to whether the wife would have cheated on her husband or not. In this version, they leave almost no doubts that she knows he is the guardsman.

Still, Rise Stevens singing is wonderful (especially when she is having dinner with the guardsman--the prince). Nelson Eddy is good in this, and he has some absolutely hilarious moments. I absolutely recommend it.

....and it is still my favorite Rise Stevens and Nelson Eddy movie. Rise Stevens i thought was the most beautfiul women i've ever seen back then. She has the most facial expressions i have also ever seen in a movie to this date. Nelson Eddy in everything he did was just wonderful. This movie is a light hearted comedy about love and trust of a married couple but who's wife has a wondering eye for male members of the audience white she is singing. Her husband thinks that she is in love with someone else dresses up as a Russian Baran to try to catch her in the act of cheating She knows almost right away that this is her husband but he thinks that she is falling inlove with this stranger who is really her husband anyway. At the end during the final scene of one of there operas the truth is revealed for a most happy, funny and musical climatic moments true to the fasion of those great MGM musicals. This light operatta has one beautiful number after another with my favorite song "My hero". This is filmed in beautful black & white and the sound for it's time is still very strong and powerful. A great film that is in every sense a true romantic musical.

This is one of those fun, timeless movies that everyone can enjoy. I wish they had it in DVD format but, until they do, I was lucky to find the VHS.

I am a Nelson Eddy fan and have been since I was a little girl. I likewise adored Rise Stevens. Put them together and they are great. The music of Oscar Strauss did not hurt either. Black and white filming is difficult at best. YOU CANNOT DEPEND ON COLOR TO COVER YOUR WEAK SPOTS. The actors and dancers muste be on target. This is a great film!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music!..Eddy excells! Rise is excellent!, August 4, 2009

Far from his earlier wooden acting, Eddy plays 2 roles beautifully, one being his own Russian rival. So he's wooing from both side's to test his wife's faithfulness. He sings Song of the Flea to start the test. Rise teases him mercelessly thru the movie to teach him a lesson.

Lots of funny scenes and fine singing including Rise's Evening Star and lighter fare with the title music by Oscar Straus

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious from start to finish, March 11, 2009

I love Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald together, so I was prepared to be disappointed in this movie where his co-star is Rise Stevens. However, from the very beginning, the plot catches the viewer and it just gets funnier and funnier as it goes on.

Karl Lang (Nelson Eddy) and Maria Lanyi (Rise Stevens) are a successful husband and wife stage team. The problem in their relationship? Maria is an overtly flirtatious woman who had numerous men in her life before she married and Karl is a nail-biting, insecure and extremely jealous husband. He's convinced his replacement in her affections is just around the next corner.

As a test of her faithfulness, he uses his acting and stage makeup knowledge to assume a disguise as Vassily Vassilievitch Varonofsky, an impressive Russian who agressively attempts to seduce Maria. Unbeknownst to Karl, Maria quickly concludes her suitor is really Karl and she sets about teaching him a lesson by tormenting him with her hot and cold behavior toward Vassily. Karl's reactions to her mixed signals are hysterical and both stars play their roles perfectly. The supporting cast is very capable, especially Nigel Bruce, who plays their mutual friend Bernard.

It goes without saying that two stars with operatic backgrounds have fantastic voices and Nelson & Rise display them to great advantage in some wonderful songs like "My Hero" and "Forgive". Anyone who ever thought Nelson Eddy couldn't act or was wooden in his performance must watch this one. Not only is his comic timing terrific, he performs the "Song of the Flea" with some very funny antics.

This one is a must for any Nelson Eddy fan and I heartily recommend it for anyone who loves comedy. There's no way to watch it without laughing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good and entertaining............, April 28, 2008
This review is from: Chocolate Soldier [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Nobody is better than Jeanette Macdonald to be teamed with Nelson Eddy, but Rise Stevens did a pretty good job. She is beautiful and sings pretty
good...good enough to be with Nelson Eddy for the Chocolate Soldier. There
is music, drama, great costumes and nice sets. The story flows pretty
good and is pleasant to the end. Another movie that ive seen in the past
as a child that has contributed to the music surrounding me in my Adult
world. A keeper..enjoy.
