Product Description

Choice of Broadsides is a text-based adventure where your choices control the story. On most pages, you'll choose between a set of options, determining which action you will take next as a young and promising naval officer.

If you like gamebooks, you'll love Choice of Broadsides. Its unique approach to interactive fiction allows larger, deeper, and richer stories than traditional gamebooks. Will you discover all of the hidden endings? Will you become an admiral, or will you be court-martialed? When on shore, will you marry for love or for career advantage, or will you leave aside romance and spend your time gambling and dueling? The choice is up to you.

The sails have been hoisted and the guns run out as the enemy ship approaches. Your country is counting on you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, and an amazing deal! January 22, 2011

Picked this one up for the Kindle when I saw it featured on their twitter account, and I'm extremely glad that I did. This interactive book is a great combination of period adventure writing, gaming, and choose-your-own adventure. They have a very unique and inventive element that reports your skill/mastery among several different categories including "fighting," "leadership," and "sailing." The book initially asks you a series of questions to get your base line numbers, and you quickly learn that you must keep them in mind when choosing your path, or risk failure or death.

The amount of choices is more than apt, and you almost always find a fitting response. I used to always be torn in traditional CYOA books because you often didn't feel one way or the other. With 4 or more choices, you never feel pigeon-holed.

Above the gaming and interactive portion of the book, I actually really enjoyed the writing. I know almost nothing about sailing and ranks, but the text almost forces you to role play. It's also phenomenal being able to rely upon the Kindle dictionary when you see a word you're not familiar with.

All-in-All, this is a hihgly engaging book that really brings you into the character. You can't beat the value, and I would definitely pick this up ir you have a Kindle and any interest what-so-ever in fantasy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun but short lived December 31, 2010
By A Customer
You will finish this adventure in about thirty minutes. It is worth no more than five dollars. It was fun and I would buy another if the subject interested me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Choice of Broadsides: Entertaining and varied January 16, 2011
Choice of Broadsides is an entertaining adventure, and a bargain at 99 cents. The story is complex and varied, and the choices you make have actual consequences throughout the tale. There's a lot more reading with this one than, say, Choice of the Dragon, and it took me about a half-hour to complete the first time around. It's taken me about that long each time; there's a lot of new material with each different choice. And that's why I've given it five stars--the choices matter, it's well written and surprising at times, and it's just a lot of fun. I think the length is perfect--you have time to do a couple of stories in a sitting, and for me, that's part of the allure of these things... I like to see just how different a story I can create each time.

My eleven-year-old has also played this one-- it's definitely appropriate for her age group--but she doesn't find it as entertaining as I have, and tends to play Choice of the Dragon much more often.

Very highly recommend. I mentioned this thing is on sale for a buck, right? Totally worth it.

2.0 out of 5 stars 5 dollars for 20 minutes December 26, 2010

I bought this Choose your own adventure hoping to have alot of fun with it and to some degree it was alright. I expected more from the game than 20 minutes. I tried several different avenues in the game and could not make it last any longer. It has promise but I would not have paid 5 dollars if I knew how little time it took to complete. At most it was worth 1 dollar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!! January 29, 2011
This gamebook was quite enjoyable and realistic. You start out as a lowly officer and get to chose your strengths and weeknesses. As the game progresses, the outcome of your decesions are not only influenced on previous desions but also on the respect other characters have for you.
I have read other reviews and noted that many people where dissatisfied that their games lasted only 20-30 minutes. I did not have this problem. Choice Of Broadsides gave me hours of entertainment as I tried out many different avenues. I have played 3 games at, probably, 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes each and found each equally enjoyable. My first game I was killed while boarding a ship early into my career. Second time around I was court-marshaled as a captain and dishonorably discharged, then lived a life in poverty. My third time held more fortune and I retired a wealthy and well-respected Admiral with a beutiful wife and kids. And, yet, there is still much more that I can`t wait to explore! So those reviewers who said they finished it too quickly can either read really, REALLY fast or just didn`t take the time to fully enjoy the book. I highly recommend this book, as it is an experience like no other.
Did I mention it`s on sale for $0.99?

5.0 out of 5 stars A past-time re-imagined! December 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought this may be just like the "Choose your own Adventure" books I remembered reading as a kid. However, I was way off. I'm about 4 chapters into Choice of Broadsides so I'm only basing my review off that and what I hope for a long read. This is as much a Choose your own adventure book as a game. It is and it's not like those old books, it does have the, "If you want to help Johnny, turn to page 52, if you want to run away, turn to page 63," elements of those books, but also it has things that you can't quite do in a book, many more options for each choice for one thing.

I don't have a long time to write this review, or even the right words in mind, but I've enjoyed it so far and it's fun to play on a Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game! July 20, 2011

I liked this game a lot. You are on a ship owned by the fake nation of Albion, and you work your way from deckhand up to admiral. It took me about an hour and a half to finish this, but I read slowly.

This had a great story, if you like ship life, and the variations in the text were seamlessly integrated. A tip for playing is to keep checking your stats by choosing Menu --> Show Stats. An example is if you have a really good sailing statistic, then you'll be able to outsail enemy ships. If you don't, you're sunk!

The story varies a little bit, but more about attitudes and friendships in the story than actual storyline. Almost the exact same thing happens every time.

I'm definitely going to order more of these from this publisher.

Pros:
+Rich vocabulary
+Keeps track of your statistics
+If you make choices based on what your best statistics are, then you'll get farther in the game
+A true text based adventure game (It's Kindle Active Content, not just a book. This also means you can only use it on a Kindle device, not your Android Kindle)

Cons:
-Can't use the Kindle dictionary with this game
-Only one storyline, your choices affect whether you die, and how good your stats are, not too much about
-Little replay value (you'll probably play only twice, once where you die, and once where you finish the game)
