A Step Up In 'Choose Your Own Adventure' Games
on October 31, 2012
E-Readers are a natural environment for 'Choose Your Own Adventure' games. Paperback books were clunky & cumbersome, but e-readers allow effortless branching; and so this type of format is continuing to evolve & improve - and everyone is a winner. Choice of the Star Captain is an example of this evolution. Earlier types of these games offered choices that primarily affected the 'flavor' and the 'direction' of the story, and your choices usually moved you towards one or more goals.
With 'Choice of the Star Captain' you will find yourself making some hard choices about the morality of your captain. Not only will your choices affect the success of your missions, but they will also effect the lives of other people in the story. This is a multi-layered story where things (and people) are not always what they seem. I also liked the fact that there were multiple missions for the star captain to go on. Not enough by a longshot for my liking, but that in itself demonstrates how successful this story is. It leaves you wanting more.
One of the non-mission elements of the story is the relationship between your captain and the ship's computer. I would have liked to see more flexibility in the relationship that would have allowed more growth between both entities - not just the captain. Most of the information that we get about the officers in the fleet organization are first-person perspectives and, thus, are rather short & shallow. It would have been nice to see these characters 'fleshed-out' a little more, especially if there is going to be a sequel to this story.
The company that published this game, Choice of Games, has published many of the best games in this format, including 'Choice of Broadsides' and 'Affairs of the Court.' They have a 'stable' of writers (and are looking for more), and show a tendancy to offer sequels to their stories. I hope that the author of this story will write some sequels to show the continuing missions of the star captain.
