Choices for a Healthy Heart,
By A Customer
This review is from: Choices for a Healthy Heart (Comb Binding) (Plastic Comb)
I first came across this book, at the age of 37, while I was participating in a Cardiac Rehab program. Because of my heart disease, I was required to begin eating a low-fat, low-cholersterol diet. This book provided me with recipes that were good for me and that my family would actually eat. It also gave me practical information and strategies for implemeting other lifestyle changes that would help in preventing additional heart disease related health issues. A very easy read and extremely helpful. Everyone will benefit from the common sense strategies and delicious recipes for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Don't wait until you have heart disease to buy this book.

This book describes strategies to enhance the prospect ofenjoying a healthy heart through sensible eating, the cessation of smoking, stress reduction and exercise. The author recommends reducing saturated fats, sodium (Na) and cholesterol to achieve the ideal body weight. The BMR is presented as a mathematical calculation of the number of calories needed when the body is at rest. The first principle is to reduce fats found in meats, oils and dairy products. The authors recommend carefully reading labels. For instance, a popular brand of soda may have 28 grams of sugar; whereas, a scoop of an all-natural ice cream may contain only 11-14 grams of sugar. Exercise is cited as a positive activity to reduce stress, strengthen the heart, improve blood chemistry and enhance the brain. Smoking kills the arterial walls. There are some high quality foods for consumption; such as, lentil soup, lean meat, almonds , tuna and other foods which are low in calories and high in protein.

This is one of the "basic library" books for anyone interested in sustainable weight loss. The author provides practical calculating tools for establishing caloric requirements, and the book is worth owning for that alone.
