I was looking forward to an easy read when Rhonda Kooyman sent me a copy of her novel Choices of the Heart. I knew it was a Christian fiction and could also be considered a romantic Christian fiction and was looking forward to digging in one day snuggled on the couch and enjoying a new author. What I wasn't expecting is the heart wrenching profound impact a simple book could have on me. Folks - listen to me on this one - it's much more than a simple romance. It's deep, meaningful and has the power to change lives.

Rhonda Kooyman in her debut novel approaches tough issues that are rarely so openly discussed in Christian literature. I have read several secular novels that dealt with the issues within the book Choices of the Heart but only one other Christian author have I come across who did a good job of making it so clear, understandable and accomplishing the feat of making the reader angry at yet sympathetic for the lead Character. Rhonda Kooyman has hit a home run with this book.

In this book you meet Tracy Dewitt an attractive and somewhat popular high school senior. Right away you see that although her family life is nice on the outside it is far from perfect. Her parents rocky relationship coupled with being the youngest of four children has left her feeling out of place and more than a little let down with life. The cast of characters is introduced immediately with simple but thorough detail that gives you a clear picture of the roles played in her life. From her best friend Cory who many think is really her boyfriend to her "frenemy" Carla each person plays a significant part of the story that unfolds.

As happens unfortunately all too often, Tracy was quickly swept away by a stranger in town named Spencer.

I was first drawn to this book because of the beautiful cover. Once i started reading, i could not put it down. I found myself caring for the main character (Tracy), and feeling as if i really know her. She is a very likeable and relatable character. The storyline itself is also very intriguing, and flows nicely (not too fast, nor too slow).
What i particularly loved about "Choices of the Heart" by Rhonda Kooyman, is the writing style. I would compare Rhonda Kooyman's writing style to Stephanie Meyer, the author of the "Twilight" series. And i don't mean that in the way that they both revolve around a young girl. The writing style is greatly personable, giving the feel that the reader can really see what the charcter sees, and feel what she feels; truely forcing the reader into the character's world.
I wasn't sure what to expect when i started the story in the begining, but i ended up extremely impressed. This is the first book Rhonda Kooyman has written so far, and i certanly hope it isn't the last. I look forward to reading another book by her.

First of all, I must note that I'm not a huge fan of books. And because this was written by a first time author, I was hesitant on spending my time reading it. But because this book was given to me through a family member I decided to give it a shot. To my surprise, the book captured my attention right away. The storyline was more then stellar and at times, I could personally relate to many of the scenarios. I enjoyed this book more then other christian novels because it was different. It had a dark side to it, but at the same time it shows that there is always hope in ones life not matter what the circumstance. This book was well written and easy to follow. I never had to go back to a previous paragraph to understand what was going on in the story. Thank you Rhonda Kooyman for taking the time to write a wonderful and inspiring story. Are there any current plans on writing another?

I was excited to read this book as my mom knows the author Rhonda Kooyman. I took this with me on a recent vacation & I could not put it down. I loved the main character and I felt very connected to her. After I finished the book, I caught myself wishing there was more to read. I didn't want the story to end. All of us have made bad choices in our lives at one time or another. Most of us have struggled at one time or another & have fallen in love with the wrong person. This was a great story because it illustrates what love looks like and what love doesn't look like. The book also reminds us that through HIM all things are possible. Buy it, Read it, and Enjoy it!

There is a very interesting story behind this review. It started off as a rocky relationship between myself and the Kindle version of this book. What has come out of that, is a learning experience and an encounter with a writer that to me was worth every penny and then some. So, thank you Rhonda Kooyman. ;)

Here's how it went down: I read the Kindle version, which the publisher apparently over-priced and then pushed through without editing. I wrote a bad review based on that version, which I hated to do but when you pay that much you want to read a FINISHED/EDITED work. The story seemed good, if not for all the mistakes in the Kindle version, and it made me just crazy to think that a story with such potential had fallen victim to a greedy publisher who didn't seem to care if the piece was polished or not. So I decided to send an email to the publisher. After contacting the publisher (who seemed totally unconcerned), I reached out to the author, who promptly sent me a singed hardcover version of the story and a very sincere apology letter for the problems with the Kindle version. Talk about going above and beyond! As a fellow writer, I just knew that if it were MY story, I'd want to know about this kind of thing. You never know how another writer will react to a bad review or being told that their hard-work was slapped up on Amazon without even being edited. Rhonda Kooyman is a TRUE PROFESSIONAL, regardless of her humble nature. She was not only upset that her work was sent out in such a poor state, but she was interested in writing a wrong that wasn't even HER fault! Bless her bones, she's got a great story, and a greater message, and she truly cares about that message. She deserves more than what she got when it comes to the way her publisher handled her work.
