Choices,
By Patricia Purcell (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Choices : The New, most up-to-date Sourcebook for Cancer Information (Paperback)
I was first introduced to CHOICES 17 years ago when my sister-in-law was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Using the book as a reference work, we were able to understand the disease she was dealing with, the tests and treatments that she was going through. It bridged the 2000 mile gap that existed between the family. I passed the earlier edition on to other friends who unfortunately had to deal with cancer. It became my bible when my husband was diagnosed as well. During the 4 years that he fought the battle, it continued to be our constant companion. When my husband's illness was declared "terminal" CHOICES remained pertinent with questions about final "choices" The authors address issues in clear layman's language. It also allows the patient to ask more informed questions and feel a better sense of control in the treatment of his or her illness. This book won't make the New York Times Best Sellers list but, it is a wonderful book to have when you need it.

A _must_ book for anyone touched by cancer in any way,
By A Customer
This review is from: Choices : The New, most up-to-date Sourcebook for Cancer Information (Paperback)
This is a oversized softback that is invaluable to anyone
who has cancer, anyone who fears they may have cancer, or
anyone that knows someone who has cancer. What this book
does is explain the multitude of types of cancer in easy to
understnd lauguage and tells you what you need to know and
what you need to ask your doctor regarding the diagnosis,
prognosis and treatment.
If nothing else it will empower the reader and help to take
the fear of the unknown out of the equation.
This book is constantly updated and I just ordered my third
copy since it was published in 1980.

Choices, Fourth Edition by Marion Morra,
By Nora Deane (Mexico) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Choices, Fourth Edition (Choices: The Most Complete Sourcebook for Cancer Information) (Paperback)
When I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1989, I discovered this book and have been recommending it to cancer patients ever since. Recently, I decided it was time to get a more up to date edition and I am glad that I did. It not only has a lot of additional information, it is still as easy to use as the earlier edition.
'Choices' is the one book that provides newly diagnosed cancer patients with answers to questions that many of us did not even we should ask. Yours in good health, Nora Deane

An extremely useful book to keep patients up to date ...,
This review is from: Choices : The New, most up-to-date Sourcebook for Cancer Information (Paperback)
The most useful tool in fighting cancer is this: knowledge. Knowledge of what exactly you have; knowledge of the latest techniques, clinical trials, meds, etc; and the risk factors. This book gives you that. Cancer is arguably the fastest moving area of medecine there is; analyses and coclusions are regularly formed, reformed, reformed again, over and over and over. Staying on top of the treatment protocols is critical, and for the moment at least, this book helps patients do that. I highly recommend this book to anyone diagnosed with cancer; it gives you an invaluable framework for asking the right questions and could save your life. Do not assume that all doctors are created equal. They are not. For a patient, it is your job to ask the right questions. This book can only help do that!

The best source book around,

This review is from: Choices : The New, most up-to-date Sourcebook for Cancer Information (Paperback)
Having worked in the oncology area and had relatives stricken with cancer, I can not think of a more useful tool for someone who needs to fight cancer. This is a very dynamic area of medicine where treatment protocols are made then remade. How do you know if your doctor is up to speed? This book tells you where the leading instutions are and how to access the latest treatments. If nothing else, this book allows you to feel like you are part of the fight.

Simple layout and very informative. Have also used previous editions. The book takes the shock out of a cancer diagnosis by supplying current treatment options on most cancers. Informs readers on steps to take for second opinions

A little too overwhelming to read immediately after diagnosis,
This review is from: Choices, Fourth Edition (Choices: The Most Complete Sourcebook for Cancer Information) (Paperback)
This was the first book I purchased after being diagnosed with breast cancer. It is an excellent reference book and is full of complete information (albeit a bit dated) I recommend reading it for information, NOT for decision making. Most of the "choices" a head (chemo, surgery, radiation) are made for you depending on what type of cancer you have. The information will help you understand the results of your tests and help you question the doctor. However, reading this book right away caused me to panic over all theses "choices" I THOUGHT I would have to make. Later I realized only later that almost all decisions were made for me based on my cancer type. The book is full of great information but read it only for information, not as choices and decisions you need to make immediately. Much testing and biopsy will be done and then many decisions are made for you based on size of tumor, lymph node involvement, stage of cancer, hormone positive, or HER2 positive/negative.
