Editorial Reviews

"Choir Above Fire Below" is Statuesque's masterpiece. From the sharp guitar pop attack of "Touché" to the rich, layered guitar textures of the sublime "Present Historic," from the samba-driven lament of "Are You Sure?" to the jarring sonic invention of "Safecracker" and "Weaponised," the album represents a new renaissance for intelligent British pop creativity. With songs (and titles) like "Boys Are Lazy, Girls Are Crazy" and "Rock And, Therefore, Roll," Stephen Manning may now be crawling through the catflap of the Canon of Great Lyricists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why the hell is this just soooo damned Good!, April 8, 2005
This review is from: Choir Above Fire Below (Audio CD)
It's not everyday that a CD grabs you by the balls, opens the car door and takes you for a spin around the delirious neighbourhood of Manningville, but this did. It's very English, very now (and sometimes then) and does strange things to your body and mind as you try to get a handle on this band's (well it is one man really) lyrical and tunesmith genius. Like music you can think and dance to? This is it. Like The Smiths? Well I do, but this is nothing like them, but strangely it is as well. It is a rum old world, but all the more pleasant due to this.
After buying this CD, I saw the band at the smallest venue in London, the Betsey Trotswood, and they were entertainers of the highest order. Look, just go and buy, some copies are going for less than the price of a pint!
